David Goldberg was in
the limelight here for many
years as the leader in sup-
porting efforts for Yeshiva
University. Hundreds re-
sponded to his call for aid to
the university that trains
rabbis, teachers, Jewish
communal leaders. Upon
his retirement, having set-
tled in Florida, he continued
quietly to encourage his as-
sociates to continue their
interest in the educational
cause.
His 80th birthday, on
April 1, indicates that he
has already left an indelible
mark among his associates,
judged by the scores of con-
gratulatory messages he
has already received.
The observance of his
80th birthday will be of a
family nature, supervised
by his wife, the former Flor-
ence Lafer, and their
daughters Susan and Linda.
Goldberg was a foun-
der of the Detroit Friends
of Yeshiva University
and was also active in
support of Yeshivath
Beth Yehudah.
He worked untiringly for
Israel Bonds, Jewish Home

Arafat Rejects
U.S. Conditions
on Recognition

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Yasir Arafat, head of the
Palestine Liberation
Organization, had indicated
that he will never,accept the
United States' conditions
for recognition fo the PLO
because he fears that it
would mean he would meet
the same fate as the late
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat.
The U.S. policy since 1975
has been that it will not talk
or negotiate with the PLO
until that group recognizes
Israel's right to exist and
accepts United Nations Se-
curity Council Resolutions
242 and 338.
The Reagan Administra-
tion has added the require-
ment that the PLO re-
nounce terrorism.
When Ted Koppel, in an
interview with Arafat at his
headquarters in Lebanon,
shown on ABC-TV's "Night-
line" program last week,
asked Arafat why he does
not .go ahead and meet the
U.S. conditions, the ter-
rorist leader said he does
not want to be considered a
"traitor" to his people as
was Sadat.
