Austrian TV
to Broadcast
Series on Jews
NEW YORK - Austrian
television has undertaken
any unprecedented project
devoted to the broadcast of
daily one-hour programs on
the pre-war history of the
country's Jews, the content
of which will become a
mandatory part of the edu-
cational curriculum for Au-
strian schools.
The broadcasts will be
capped by the selection of 10
non-Jewish • Austrian
schoolchildren chosen for a
"getting acquainted" visit to
Israel, according to the
World Jewish Congress.
The month-long series of
nightly broadcasts is the
product of joint collabora-
tion between the Austrian
Educational Ministry, the
Jewish Welcome Service of
Vienna, and the Austrian
television network. The
series seeks to illuminate
the role played by Austrian
Jewry in the country during
the period from 1918 to
1938, until the Nazi
takeover.
Austrian Jewry was all
but destroyed during the
Holocaust. The vibrant
community of 200,000 Jews
was reduced to 12,000.
