38 Friday, March 26, 1982 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS ihG st Diti1116 IlY STYLE Danny Raskin's The Best of Everything PEOPLE ASK why folks come from all over to enjoy the fare at Red Devil, Fen- kell and Greenfield . . . and the reasons are apparent with a visit . . . It's clean, spacious and easily one of the top eateries around for family dining . . . within a family budget . . . Costs go up on food but Red Devil prices remain the same . . . and everything served is high quality. You can't fool owner Yahia (pro- nounced Ya-Ya) Mawari on the meat . . . Back in 1975, he had his own butcher shop in Dearborn . . . Today as the always smiling "Ya Ya" greeting people and work- ing constantly, he is celeb- rating his second anniver- sary as owner of the 165- seater Red Devil. Besides being a former butcher, Yahia, was also a chef in Europe . . . His place here is packed during lunch, some people driving all the way from Downtown Detroit . . . He does a tre- mendous carry-out business . . . has a beautiful private banquet room . . . and eve- ning dinners there are a must with many who also enjoy having a courteous man outside in attendance at the lighted parking. A lot of peOple still don't know that Red Devil also serves cocktails . . . They re- member when it only had beer and wine . . . The pleasant-looking -bar amid a homey surround- ing presents an added at- traction. There were four of us . . . I was in a craving mood for Red Devil pizza, considered to be among the best round- ers . . . The craving was so great that when waitress Vera Miller asked what I wanted on it, the answer was everything and any- thing that could be thought of . . . That is, except an- chovies, which I ordered on the side but never received. The pizza came seemingly with whatever they had in the kitchen . . . and was it good! . . . You'd think with all that stuff it would be too heavy and too much a clashy mixture . . . But Red Devil pizzas are noted to be in a private class that ooze with tasteful, light goodness atop crisp thin dough . . . regardless of what you order on them . . . Three different cheeses . . . non-processed . . . are also a Red Devil pizza trademark. Although the yearning was so great for pizza, I couldn't pass up the wonder- ful antipasto salad . . . or any of those soft bread sticks soaked in garlic bat- ter and made to order on the spot at Red Devil. Marilyn Frumkin was on a diet and bravely passed up everything until her dinner came . . . "One of the best pieces of broiled chicken I've ever tasted," said Marilyn . . . Her hus- band, Sid, and my wife, . Frieda, had the full- bodied, very tasty mines- trone soup . . . Sid had delicious Veal Tosca and Frieda ordered the tasty Veal Parmigian,a . . . with a side of rolled Sal- timbocca tossed in. You could tell that Yahia's experience as a butcher pays off . . . The fresh veal quality at Red Devil is very high . . . and customers don't have to pay an arm and a leg to get it. Red Devil is open seven- days-a-week . . . and little wonder that it ranks among the finest neighborhood res- taurants. PICKLE BARREL has a celebration this week . . the end of a very bad winter (it and many others hope). People can buy as much corned beef or pastrami as they want, one pound or more . . . and get an equal amount free from today until next Thursday . . . Not just one pound, mind you . . . as much as folks want! MIXING BUSINESS with fun is a pastime with the new A & B Merchandis- ing team of Joe Anne Adams and John Monet . . . and on one day each month, it's all fun . . The second in its area series of shindigs was recently given at Topinka's Country House on W. Seven Mile and Tele- graph . . . for birthday gals Sadye Mattis, Farmington Hills, and Nancy Morrison, Birmingham . . . plus Mer- chant of The Month Awards to Mark Meyerson of Bud- dy's Bar-B-Que, Far- mington Hills, and Dave Underdown, Douglas Cleaners, Birmingham. The winners were picked up at their residences in chauffered limousine and brought to Topinka's . . . for cocktails, dinner with violin entertainment . . . and an excellent magic show . . . Sadye and Nancy got birthday cakes Mark and Doug received plaques. The magic was in a class of its own . . . by Al Wyg- ant, whose extraordinary sleight of hands brings wide-eyed amazement wherever he appears . . . whether it's on stage in Las Vegas or a Bar Mitzva in Southfield, where he and wife Marcy live. Besides being a very fine magician, Al is one of the best left-handed golfers around . . . and a former New York Yankee first base farmhand who back in 1956 hit 10 homers in four West- ern League games at peka . . . They take a backseat, however, to his magical wizardry and witty repartee. TIM HEWITT and Feel- ings debut in Dewey's at Michigan Inn this Monday . . . ap`pearing through April 10.
