THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Museum Tells Aliya History Danny Raskin's LISTENING POST DANA STEVENS, daughter of Evelyn and Irv- ing Stevens, is a 23-year- old cerebral palsy victim . . . and a courageous one . . . The past three years she has been competing in the Cerebral Palsy Olym- pics . . . In 1981 Daha qual- ified for the national com- petition in Rhode Island. She is one of 58 from among 500 athletes selected to be on the USA Cerebral Palsy Sports Team who will compete at an international level this July in Denmark . . . Dana qualified for the free style swim race . . . and will also compete in a wheelchair race, wheel- chq,ir slalom, team bocci ball and Indian club toss. Her present concern and energy are directed toward raising $1,200 to cover the Denmark trip. Because of her severe physical involvement and years of therapy and patterning at home, Dana at the age of five went to a private residential school in North Dakota . . . She graduated high school in 1978 when she moved to her parents' home .. . Dana then attended Oak- land Community College where she maintained an A average. Her goal and dream was to find an apartment or facility where she could live independently with other physically disabled, men- tally able young adults . . . United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan built just such a facility. - She is now living inde- pendently in Lansing with 11 other physically im- paired adults, each of whom has his or her own apart- ment . . . Although she is not in school presently, she is kept busy with many out- side sports and social events, catching up with correspondence, reading and adjusting to indepen- dent living.
