36 Friday, March 26, 1982 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Uzi Manufacturers Striving to Increase Gun's Popularity You wouldn't give one as a gift. And you wouldn't have one for breakfast. - Nevertheless, the Uzi submachine gun, like the diamond and the orange, is one of Israel's most sought after export items. However, keeping the 30-year-old gun at the top of arms buyers' lists is not an easy job, according to Zvi Yarom, head of Israel Military Industries' small arms factory. Yarom is the cousin of Detroiter Max Nosanchuk. Uzi sales, which had quadrupled since 1973, have shown no growth over tlT past two years. "We need to encourage people to buy something new," Yarom explained. So, IMI has introduced a civilian, semi-automatic version of the military weapon. This version is sold to consumers and collectors in the United States. A "mini-Uzi" is also being de- veloped, according to Yarom. The Uzi, first produced in the 1950s, is popular with paratroopers and special se- curity units. No other weapon combines the com- pact size (25 inches in length, with a weight of eight pounds) and durabil- ity of the Uzi. The gun will fire even if the barrel is jammed with sand. The weapons, which cost about $350 each, have been used by the Elysee Guard in France, the Buckingham Palace Guard in Britain and Secret Service agents in the U.S. NCSY Offers Prayer in Sign Language 31313 Northwestern Farmington Hills Mon.-Sat. 9:30-5:00 851-7333 NEW YORK — Our Way, the program for the Jewish deaf sponsored by the Na- tional Conference of Synagogue Youth, is dis- tributing the blessing for matza, in sign language, to deaf Jewish youth and adults in preparaton for Passover.
