Mob Rule Destroyed Frank Trial

By WARREN FREEDMAN

The trial of Leo M. Frank
in 1913 was a travesty of
justice; he was denied every
semblance of a fair trial by a
mob, whipped into an anti-
Semitic frenzy by the rant-
ings of one Tom Watson, a
Populist Jew-hater, and by

the sensational reporting of
the Hearst newspaper "The
Georgian."
The chief of police of At-
lanta and a colonel of the
local militia regiment actu-
ally came into court and
conferred with the trial
judge in the presence of the
jury. Individual jurors re-
ceived threats, and insane
prejudice and virulent
animosity ruled the day.
Trial Judge Roan even
requested that Frank and
his attorney waive their
right to hear the jury render
its verdict, for fear that a
verdict of not-guilty would
set the mob upon the court
and jury! Neither Frank
nor his attorney were in the
courtroom when the jury
pronounced the verdict of
guilty!

LA Rabbi Heads
Effort to Stop
Cult Activities

LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
The chairman of the Los
Angeles Jewish Federation
Council Community Rela-
tions Committee's Task
Force on Cults and Missio
nary Efforts has outlined a
major expansion of the Task
Force battle against the
cults and missionary
groups.
Rabbi Stephen Robbins
told more than 100 people
attending a community
meeting that out-reach ef-
forts were planned for all re-
ligious and public schools
and institutions. He also in-
dicated that the Task Force
hopes to work with legisla-
tive and law enforcement of-
ficials on changes both in
the letter and the interpre-
tation of laws relating to
such groups.
Robbins said planned pro-
jects include a speakers
bureau coalition building
between Jews and non-Jews
to counter cult efforts;
seminars for teachers, prin-
cipals of Jewish and public
schools, the creation of a
curriculum on cults; and es-
tablishment of media con-
tacts to get the anti-cult
message out to the public.

Riyadh, Toronto
Universities Sign
Exchange Pact

TORONTO — A five-year
agreement calling for the
exchange of students and
staff with King Saud Uni-
versity in Riyadh, Saudi
Arabia has been signed by
the -University of Toronto.
The Saudi government
will finance the exchange
program and will also help
fund joint reserach projects
undertaken in Saudi Arabia
and Canada.
The Saudis have also ap-
proached McGill and Con-
cordia universities in
Montreal and the Univer-
sity of Guelph in Ontario
with similar exchange
proposals.
The Saudi offer has stir-
red controversy at Concor-
dia, where some staff mem-
bers fear that Saudi visa
policies would prevent
Jewish professors from par-
ticipating in the programs.

new trial Judge Roan
stated that he was not
sure of Frank's guilt nor
was he satisfied of
Frank's innocence;
nevertheless, he refused
to disturb the jury's find-
ing.
After conviction, Gover-
nor John M. Slaton of Geor-
gia tried to right the wrong
perpetrated against Leo M.
Frank by commuting the
sentence of hanging to life
imprisonment. This
humanitarian gesture
ended the political career of
Governor Slaton.
This. American Dreyfus
case goes down in history as
an example of a prejudiced
jury and a - court paralyzed
by mob domination result-
ing in a conviction contrary
to the evidence. It was not
until 1923 in Moore vs. De-
mpsey that the United
States Supreme Court spel-
led out the rules of a fair
trial as guaranteed by the
U.S. Constitution.
The great Jewish lawyer
Louis Marshall handled the
unsuccessful appeals of the
Frank case.
