He was last seen as "Father Salamonico," a modern King Lear, during the Israeli Film Festival at the Hollywood Laemmle Theater. In the television epic, "Masada," filmed on loca- tion in Israel and in the studios of Universal City, Bar-Yotam was the cunning old butcher who at one time outwitted the enemy. The actor, who has es- sayed mostly characters in the autumn of life, is actu- ally a vibrant, young man in his early 40s. Though Reuven Bar- Yotam has portrayed mostly earthy characters who have their roots in the soil of his country, he is highly intellectual, speaks fluent English, Spanish, Arabic, Italian and Rus- sian. Born in Tel Aviv, - a second-generation Sabra, he trained with the Habima, the National The- ater of Israel; the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London; at the British, PRESTON BURKE GALLERIES National Theater under Sir Laurence Olivier; and at the Actors Studio in New York. At the Municipal Theater in Haifa, he appeared on and off for almost a quarter of a century in the reper- tory in Shakespeare's "Richard the Third," as "The Playboy of the West- ern World," in Bertolt Brecht's "Mother Courage," as Macky in "The Three Penny Opera," as Joseph K in Kafka's "The Trial," in the title role of Ibsen's "The Master Builder," as the doc- tor in Chekhov's "Uncle Yanya," and opposite To- pol's Petruchio as the ser- vant in "Taming of the Shrew." Bar-Yotam started his film career in 1961 in the Italian - British co- production of Dino De- Laurentiis' "The Best of Enemies," a film whose production we attended by chance in Eilat and Beersheba. For the Israeli screen, he co-wrote and starred in "Let's Blow a Million," "The Persuader" and the two parts of "Salamonico." In Menahem Golan's Hebrew - and - English language ver- sion's of "Entebbe, ' he was a concentration camp sur- vivor among the Jewish hostages. He has guest-starred on 569-3330 television in "Hill Street Blues," "Taxi," and co- starred with Peter Strauss (after their collaboration in "Masada") in "A Whale for the Killing." * * * Among the five academy award nominees for best picture is the British-made "Chariots of Fire." Hugh Hudson, the film's director, is also a nominee. "Chariots of Fire" deal:. with the 1924 Olympics in Paris and depicts the plight of Harold Abrahams who faces the anti-Semitism then rampant in the col- leges of England. Among the five foreign- language films up for an Academy Award are two outspoken, graphic anti- Nazi pictures, Switzerland's "The Boat Is Full" and Hun- gary's "Mephisto." For best achievement in documen- tary films, "Genocide," has been nominated. The pic- ture deals with the Holocaust and was pro- duced by Arnold Schwartzman and the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Kol Yisrael (the Voice of Israel) broadcasts 600 hours weekly over three Israeli radio channels and an over- seas radio network. The broadcasts are in 16 lan- guages. THE NEVYORKER 0 CA,.
