NEW YORK — American
subsidiaries of foreign com-
panies must obey federal
anti-discrimination laws in
their hiring practices, ac-
cording to a friend-of-the-
court brief submitted to the
U.S. Supreme Court by the
American Jewish Congress
and six other organizations.
The brief contends such
companies are not exempt
from anti-bias legislation,
notwithstanding the fact
that the U.S. and the parent
company's country may
have signed a trade treaty
affirming the right of cer-
tain companies to have a
- free choice in hiring man-
agerial personnel.
The other signers are the
American Civil Liberties
Union, American Jewish
Committee, .Anti-
Defamatioh League of Bnai
Brith, Mexican-American
Legal Defense and Educa-
tional Fund, National Or-
ganization of Women Legal
Defense and Education
Fund and the Puerto-Rican
Defense and Education
Fund, Inc.
