Architect Charles Agree Dies
Charles N. Agree, a
pioneer and leader in ar-
chitectural spheres in
Michigan and a longtime
leader in community ac-
tivities, died March 10 at
age 84.
Born in Stamford, Conn.,
Mr. Agree lived in Detroit
since 1908. He was among
the founders and early pres-
idents of Cong. Shaarey
Zedek's Men's Club and was
active in the synagogue on
many important commit-
tees and in an advisory
capacity in construction of
the synagogue's buildings.
Among the Jewish com-
munal organizations he
served and the offices he
held in them were: life_
board member and past
president of Fresh Air Soci-
ety, vice president of the
board of Sinai Hospital of
Detroit, former secretary
and treasurer of Clover Hill
Park Cemetery, Downtown
Synagogue, chairman of the
Building and Real Estate
Division of the Allied
Jewish Campaign, board of
directors of Jewish Welfare
Federation. •
Mr. Agree also was af-

Joel W. Josephson, an at-
torney, died March 9 at age
76.
A former Detroiter, Mr.
Josephson resided in Hal-
landale, Fla., at the time of
his death. He was a practic-
ing attorney for more than
50 years. He was a founding
partner in the firm of
Josephson, Tennen and
Haron in Southfield.
Mr. Josephson was
graduated from the Detroit
College of Law in 1928. He
specialized in real estate
law.
He was a member of the
State Bar of Michigan and
Perfection Lodge of the Ma-
sons.
He leaves his wife, Sara;
two daughters, Mrs. Harvey
(Judith) Tennen of Franklin
and Mrs. Daniel (Sheila)
Greenwald of Alexandria,
Va.; three sisters, Mrs.
Harry (Lena) Gross of
Florida, Mrs. Jack (Laura)
Bigelman and Freda, both
of Oak Park; and five
grandchildren. Interment
Detroit.

Creation Science
The state Board of Educa-
tion voted unanimously
Wednesday to order Michi-
gan school districts to stop
teaching "Creationism."
The board said Creation
science was religion, and
violated the separation of
church and state doctrine of
the Constitution.
Three districts in Michi-
gan, including two in
Jackson County, teach
about Creationism in their
science classes.

He was a practicing ar-
chitect for more than 50
years. He attended the Uni-
versity of Michigan and the
Detroit Institute of
Technology.
His company, Charles
N. Agree, Inc., Architects,
began in the 1920s by
building apartment
hotels. In the 1930s and
1940s, his firm diversified

Dr. Abraham Beresh, an
optometrist for more than
35 years, died March 8 at
age 68.
Born in Russia; Dr. Be-
resh retired in 1970. He had
offices in. Lincoln Park. He
was a graduate of the Il-
linois College of Optometry
(1936).
Dr. Beresh was a member
of the American Optomet-
roy Association, Tikvah
Lodge of Bnai Brith, Mosaic
Lodge of the Masons, Cres-
cent Shrine Club and was a
past president of the Lin-
coln Park Chamber of
Commerce. He also was a
former Scoutmaster.
He leaves his wife, Fr-
ances; two sons, Lawrence
and Michael; his mother,
Mrs. Joseph (Fannie) Be-
resh; three brothers, Dr.
Louis, Morris and Myer
"Mike"; a sister, Mrs. Mic-
key (Eleanor) Gross; and
two granddaughters.

Nathan Ziprin, a pioneer in
American Jewish jour-
- nalism and editorfrom 1941
to 1968 of Seven Arts Fea-
tures and Worldwide News
Service, a subsidiary of the
Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, died last Friday in
Phoenix, Ariz., at age 84.
Mr. Ziprin ha H. been ac-
tively associated with the
American Jewish Public
Relations Association.
Born in Chmelnik, Russia
in 1898, Mr. Ziprin was
brought to the United
States in 1909 at age 11. He
received an honorary LLB'
degree from New York Uni-
versity in 1922.

Centenarian Dies
NEW YORK — Gabriel
Isaharov, a Russian immig-
rant who achieved his
dream of becoming an
American citizen at age 99,
died March 3 at age 100.
In 1973 he was able to
leave the Soviet Union for
Israel and came to the U.S.
in 1978.
Asked why, at such an
advanced age, he wanted to
become a citizen, Mr.
Isaharov said: "Because I
was born free and I want to
die free as a citizen of this

LONDON — Abie
Nathan, the operator of the
"Voice of Peace" radio ship,
now plans to move his oper-
ations to waters offthe coast
of Northern Ireland.
A bill allowing Nathan to
operate the ship from an Is-
raeli port received a first
reading in the Knesset last
month, but is currently
being held up in committee.
Nathan,. 54, a former Tel
Aviv - restaurateur and
Royal Air Force pilot, has
been broadcasting from the
ship in the Mediterranean
without government ap-
proval.

Resource Center
PHILADELPHIA — A
new resource center, de-
signed to aid educators at
Jewish and Christian con-
gregations, will be estab-
lished by the National Insti-
tute on the Holocaust. •
The resource center will
be named for Anne Frank,
according to Dr. Rufus Cor-
nelson, chairman of the
Holocaust Institute.
