How does Jordan generally pay to the 7100 Orchard Lake by Rabbi Arthur Schneier, U.S. for weaponry "sold" in millions of dollars? Rd. Jordan is a very poor country. Unlike other Arab coun- chairman of the American at Northwestern, Section of the World Jewish tries, it has no oil. It also has no other natural resources. It gets financial support from its "rich un- solution condemning Israel cle" Saudi Arabia, but not enough to meet its budget. It makes its pay- ments regularly and on time, with added interest. It has the sources enabling the country to meet its foreign debts through export of Israeli products. Its export to the United States last year amounted to over $1 billion — which was of about 25 percent of Israel's total export. Among the prod- Harvard Row ucts exported to the U.S. were electronics, avionics, solar energy devices, medical equip:Tient, computer software, polished diamonds, gold jewelry; and even executive planes manufactured by Israeli Aircraft Industries, the cost of Your Headquarters each ranges between $4 million and $6 million. For All Your Jordan has no such export, and no sources to develop such export. Nevertheless it received about $300 million Passover Needs from the U.S. in goods — mostly military — during the first six months of last year, not to speak of previous years. The All Discount Prices method of payments of these credits remain unknown and doubtful. DEFIANCE OF TODAY: In the long run, the Ameri- can taxpayer covers the cost of the armaments which the U.S. "sells" to Jordan. A good part of the "loans" which the U.S. government makes to Jordan in millions Of dollars annually is eventually "forgiven." This will happen also if the U.S. "sells" the F-16 jets and the mobile Hawk missiles to Jordan. King Hussein has lots of "hutzpa" when it comes to the United States but he has no means to pay for the armaments he wants from the United States. He displays no such "hutzpa" toward Saudi Arabia. He listens to his "master's voice" and complies with the will of Saudi Arabia, but he flatly refuses to cooperate with the U.S. government in efforts to establish stability in the Middle East through understandings similar to the one 11 Mile & Lanser reached between Egypt and Israel at Camp David. At present, he is about to receive Soviet-made anti- aircraft missiles in defiance of the U.S. This will bring Soviet military advisers and technicians to Jordan for the first time.
