The experts were Dr. Chaim Waxman, associate professor of sociology at Rutgers University; Rabbi Karen Fox, director of the New Jersey-West Hudson Valley of the Union of American Hebrew Congre- gations (UAHC); Dr. Isaac Hershkopf, a psychiatrist and New York University Medical School faculty member; and Diane Leven- berg, author and poetry coordinator at the AJCon- gress Martin Steinberg center. Waxman noted that the birth rate among American Jews continues to drop, dec- laring that the average number of children per Jewish couple is now down to 1.67 — below the re- placement level of 2.2 sup- ported by population control advocates. Fox said interfaith couples should be en- couraged to join the synagogue, become ac- tive members of the con- gregation, and raise their children as Jews "not only for the survival of the Jewish community, but also for the personal satisfaction that being Jewish can give an indi- vidual." Hershkopf pointed out the irony of the fact that the sense of security Jews feel as members of American society has contributed to the weakening of Jewish ties. While Levenberg prop- osed that Jewish institu- tions reach out more effec- tively to single Jews, adding that as a family oriented en- tity, Judaism has neglected the steadily growing number of single people. The spokesman was re- sponding to a Pentagon an- nouncement Tuesday that it intends to sell Israel 200 improved- Hawk mobile anti-craft missiles. The an- nouncement appeared cal- culated to reduce Congres- sional opposition to the proposed sale of mobile Hawk batteries to Jordan. The Israeli spokesman stressed that the new Hawk missiles would represent a qualitative, not quantita- tive improvement in Israel's air defense system. The Pentagon an- nouncement said the $47 million sale would "sup- plement" Israel's current supply of Hawk missiles "ensuring an adequate war reserve and adequate mis- siles for annual training re- quirements." • !OchtY7'44 Sri BAS. 3 Titoes: Nation- De 1 ivOyy, $1795 Ropmc McfNpIN 772-4350 NUAL GOL 3RD A GLASSMAN'S Students Hurt in Nablus Rift TEL AVIV (JTA) — Two Palestinian high school students were wounded by Israeli soldiers during a melee in Nablus Saturday. One, with a bullet in his stomach, underwent surgery and was reported to be out of danger. The other was hit in the leg. According to an army spokesman, the soldiers fired into the air to break up a stone-throwing demonst- ration protesting the con- tinued shutdown of Bir Zeit University. The spokesman said an investigation of the incident proved that the soldiers had acted strictly in accordance with standing orders on the use of fire arms to protect themselves. Meanwhile, nine Israeli academicians were de- tained by the military gov- ernment last Friday for at- tending a rally , in Bethlehem on behalf of Bir Zeit University. They were released on bail.
