Significant support from around the world has allowed the department to greatly increase the size and quality of its staff, as well as the scope of its re- search activities." This was reported recently by Dr. Leon Fill, vice president of the university's American Board of Overseers and a member of its Global Board of Trustees. Bar - Ilan, Fill reports, has been in the forefront of advances in medical re- search since after the Yom • Kippur War in 1973, which coincided with the opening of new research facilities on campus. Early success attracted top researchers from Israel, Europe, and North America, he said, who came to Bar - Ilan both because of the quality of its research, and the Jewish atmosphere that characterizes the Uni- versity. The great emphasis at Bar - Ilan is on applied research directly related to the causes and treat- ment of human disease. Six major disease-related areas are currently under study: the cancer research unit, where work has centered around the body's im- - mune system; the heart_ and circulatory unit, focusing on the physiological and biochemical changes in the heart and brain dur- ing cardio-vascular dis- ease; the muscle disease unit, attempting to define basic biochemical ab- normalities of muscular dystrophy and related conditions; the nervous system unit, looking at the effects of thyroid im- balance on skeletal mus- cle growth; the male in- fertility unit, characteriz- ing the properties of normal and abnormal sperm cells; and the aging research unit, studying the body's natural mechanisms that may be utilized to counter the aging proc- ess. Under Dr. Fill's leader- ship, Detroit support for Bar - Ilan research has grown markedly in the last two years. For information con- cerning Bar Ilan's medical research, call the univer- sity's Oak Park office, 398- 7180. Scoliosis Group Meeting Planned The Scoliosis Association of Michigan will meet 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the ad- ministrative services build- ing at William Beaumont Hospital. Dr. Michael S. Frank will speak on "Skin Problems Associated -With Scoliosis." For information, call Rosemary Dirksen, secre- tary, 855-9883. •• • • • • • • • • • • • have them • • REMEMBER YOUR AFFAIR • • • • • with • • COMPUTER PORTRAITS • • • Framed Pictures, • • • Posters, T-Shirts, Etc. • • • BANQUETS, PARTIES 4 : • WEDDINGS, SHOWERS MITZVAHS, ETC. • • • • Call • • PHOTOGRAPHIC •COMPUTER- IMAGES, INCA• 14 ' (313) 851-5977 • located in Tally Hall, •I Also Farmington • Hills •••••••••••• DR.
