Rabbi Gunther Plaut to Be
Beth El Scholar-in-Residence
Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut
will be the scholar-in-
residence at Temple Beth El
March 19-21. The theme of
the weekend is "Torah for
Moderns.'.,'
On March 19, 8:30 p.m.,
Rabbi Plaut will speak on
"The Disappointments of
God — a New Approach to
Torah."
At 9:30 a.m. March 20,
Rabbi Plaut will speak be-
fore the combined Torah
and confirmation classes.
His topic will be "Interpret-
'n.g the Sidra on Numbers
_ L." At the Shabat services
at 11 a.m., he will speak on
On Being Number One."
Rabbi Plaut will ad-
dress the Sunday Morn-
ing Breakfast Club,
sponsored by the
brotherhood and the
high school department
of the temple, on March
21. He will speak on
"Three Biblical Puzzles."

Dr. Plaut emigrated to
the U.S. from Germany in
1935 after graduating from
law school and earning his
doctorate degree at the
University of Berlin in
1934.
Ordained at Hebrew
Union College in Cincin-
nati in 1939, he first served
the Washington Boulevard
Temple in Chicago, became
a chaplain in the U.S. Army
in World War II, served
Mount Zion Temple in St.
Paul, Minn., before moving
to Toronto in 1961 to serve
as senior rabbi. In 1978, he
became rabbi emeritus, tak- -
ing the title of senior
scholar.
He has written many
books. His major achieve-
ment is the recent Torah
Commentary, to which he
contributed four of the five

The cultural commission
of Cong. Shaarey Zedek an-
nounces that the last pro-
gram of its music series in
celebration of the
synagogue's 120th anniver-
sary will feature the re-
knowned flutist Shaul
Ben-Meir and pianist,
Muriel Kilby, in a program
of Jewish music at 8 p.m.
Tuesday at Shaarey Zedek.
Ben-Meir will play selec-
tions by Ben-Haim, Chajes
and Ernest Bloch. Dr. and
Mrs. Samuel Stulberg head
the music division of the
cultural committee.
Purim Dinner,
Auction Slated
_Young Israel of Oak-
,- Woods will hold its annual
arim auction and dinner
March 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the
synagogue. Allen Ishakis is
chairman of the event. A
special program for young
children with movies will be
held following the dinner.

dian Jewish Congress.
He has been chairman of
Toronto United Jewish
Appeal, vice president of
the Central Conference
of American Rabbis,
editorial writer for the
Toronto Globe and Mail.
He also received the
Humanitarian Award
from the Canadian
Council of Christians and
Jews.
Emanu-El Hosts
Israeli Vocalist
Ronit Kalisky, coloratura
soprano, will sing at Temple
Emanu-El 8 p.m. March 21.
Miss Kalisky is the third
performer in the Temple
Emanu-El 1981-1982 Cul-
tural Series.
Miss Kalisky was born in
Tel Aviv, Israel, and began
her vocal studies at age 13.
She continued her musical
studies in Israel and the
United States. She per-
formed opera in Italy and
New York. She will present
both Israeli and classical
music, .

sie University, is conduct-

lieved to be living in De-
troit.
In his letter to The Jewish
News, Dr. Katsh stated in
part:
"The Russian letter indi-
cates that Prof. Zetlin had
relatives in the Bronx by
the name of Henry L. Gom-
berg, but that was a long
time ago, and his children
lived in Detroit.
"The name of one child
was Naftali, who lived at
17614 Santa Barbara Ave-
nue, Detroit, Mich., under
the name of Roza Derzaw."
