BONN (JTA) - The city
of Hamburg plans to erect a
memorial to the poet Hein-
rich Heine to replace the
one destroyed by the Nazis
because of Heine's Jewish
origin.
The project was an-
nounced less than a month
after the university of Dus-
seldorf, the city where
Heine was born, voted 44-41
against proposals to re-
name the university after
Heine.
Hamburg has commis-
sioned sculptor Waldemar
Otto of Bremen to build the
new Heine memorial mod-
eled on the old one. It will be
erected in front of the Ham-
burg City Hall and is ex-
pected to be dedicated in
May.
