Synagogue in Willemstad, Curacao. The congregation
is marking the 250th anniversary of the building, the
oldest synagogue building in continuous use in the
Western Hemisphere. A delegation of the World
Union for Progressive Judaism is participating in the
anniversary events next week. The building, opened
in 1732, is the fourth synagogue of the congregation,
which was founded in 1654 by Jews fleeing the Inquis-
ition in Brazil.

Israel Selling Arms to Iran?

WASHINGTON — The
New York Times reported
this week that Israel, North
Korea, Syria, Libya, the
Soviet Union and "several
countries in Western
Europe" were supplying
arms to Iran in its war with
Iraq.
The paper quoted un-
named intelligence sources
and officials in Jerusalem
and speculated about Is-
rael's motives.
Citing the unnamed
sources, the article
speculated that Israel
wanted to retain some
pro-Western influence in
Iran, that it might be try-
ing to keep the Iraqis
weak by helping Iraq's
enemy, and that it was
protecting the 50,000 Ira-
nian Jews still living in
Iran.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Syria, S. Yemen
May Now Buy
U.S. Airplanes

I am grateful to you, dear friends, relatives, and family for
your thoughtfulness and help during my five-month stay in the
hospital. Without your encouragement and caring I could not
have made it. I now look forward to a complete recovery.

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Reagan Administra-
tion will no longer bar Syria
and South Yemen from
buing civilian aircraft from
the U.S. even though the
two countries are still on the
list of four nations the U.S.
considers to be supporters of
international terrorism.
However, any sale must
include assurances that the
planes will not be used for
military purposes, State
Department spokesman
Dean Fischer said. The sale
would apply only to aircraft
to be used on "scheduled
civil airlines" in the two
countries, Fischer added.
Fischer stressed that there
are no pending applications
from either country to pur-
chase such planes in the
U.S.
The Administration has
removed Iraq from the
countries it lists as a "sup-
porter of international ter-
rorism" and replaced it with
Cuba.
Fischer said that the
State Department and
the Department of Com-
merce, in making their
annual review of which
countries "repeatedly
provide support for in-
ternational terrorism,"
found that Iraq's record
in 1981 "did not warrant
its continued inclusion
on the list."
However, the department
stressed that Iraq's removal
from the list does not mean
the U.S. plans to sell arms to
that country.

I thank you for your many good wishes, prayers, visits and
contributions made in my name. Most important, I thank you for
your caring concern and moral support. Thanks again and
again .. .
