Weinberger Affirms Support
for Missile Sale to Jordan

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Defense Secretary Caspar
Weinberger continued to
indicate his support for pro-
viding Jordan with Hawk
mobile anti-aircraft mis-
siles.
Speaking to the National
Press Club here, Wein-
berger acknowledged that
similar remarks by him
while visiting Amman last
month had stirred up Israel.
While in Jordan, he un-
successfully tried to per-
suade the Jordanians to
cancel their decision to buy
SAM-8 missiles from the
Soviet Union. Jordan
turned to the USSR because
Congress would permit the
U.S. to sell them only Hawk
missiles fixed in place, to
prevent those weapons from
being used against Israel.

When Weinberger re-
turned to the U.S. President
Regan sent a letter to Israeli
Premier Menahem Begin
denying that any offer of
arms had been made to Jor-
dan. Weinberger said that
the Jordanian arms request
will probably be made at a
meeting of the U.S. - Jordan
Joint Military Commission
next month.
In a related develop-
ment, a resolution urging
the Reagan Administra-

tion not to sell any ad-
vanced weapons to Jor-
dan, including aircraft
and mobile missiles, "be-
cause they threaten the
security of Israel," has
been introduced by Sen.
Edward Kennedy (D-
Mass.) and John Heinz
(R-Pa.)
Meanwhile, former Vice
President Walter Mondale
attacked the Reagan Ad-
ministration's Middle East
policy, which he said was a
"mess," and called on Presi-
dent Reagan to issue a
"clear" unequivocal state-
ment that the Administra-
tion will not sell Jordan
F-16 fighter planes and
Hawk mobile missiles.
In New York, some 40
people, including Conserva-
tive rabbis and Jewish
community leaders,
gathered across from the
United Nations at the
Isaiah - Wall Monday to
mark the end of a three-day
weekend of seminars, work-
shops, prayer and cluster
congregation services de-
signed to focus attention
and dramatize the Ameri-
can Jewish community's
concern with the "drift of
U.S. policy in the Middle
East away from Israel and
toward the 'moderate' Arab
countries."

WASHINGTON — A
resolution calling for the
end of all U.S. military in-
volvement in El Salvador
has been introduced in the
House of Representatives
by Rep. Benjamin Rosent-
hal (D-NY).
Michigan Democratic
Congressman John Conyers
Jr. is one of four co-sponsors
of the resolution. The others
are Reps. Phillip Burton
(D-Calif.), Robert Kasten-
meier (D-Wis.), and Don
Edwards (D-Calif.).
The Rosenthal resolu-
tion is the most far-
reaching of a number of
Congressional measures
on El Salvador and is
given little chance to pass
compared with other,
more moderate bills.

Rosenthal has been on
Capitol Hill for 20 years.
The 59-year-old native of
Queens was one of the first
Congressmen to voice oppo-
sition over U.S. involve-
ment in Vietnam. It was Ro-
senthal's idea in 1969 to
keep the- House in an all-
night session as a symbol of
support for anti-war
demonstrators.
