Volume Depicts Struggle
Between Feminism, Judaism

NEW YORK — In "On
Women and Judaism: A
View from Tradition" pub-
lished by The Jewish Publi-
cation Society of America,
Blu Greenberg, a writer and
lecturer, an adherent of Or-
thodox Judaism and an ad-
vocate of women's rights,
addresses the situation of
the contemporary woman
wrestling with Judaism.
Describing herself as a
one-time "mild-mannered
yeshiva girl" who has found
"happiness among the
feminists," Ms. Greenberg
poses the question: "What
position can we as commit-
ted Jews take toward
feminism?" . . . Where
must we separate ourselves
from mainstream Judaism,
and what are the pressure
points in our tradition that,
because we are women, we
must locate?"
Outlining her own situa-
tion, she writes: "Judaism is
my life . . . Feminism is a
new ethical movement of

cause I am a woman. It is

TEL AVIV (ZINS) —
Yehuda Litani, writing in
Haaretz, says that the grow-
ing trend toward Moslem
fundamentalism in the ad-
ministered territories is a
direct challenge to the
Palestine Liberation
Organization and any other
"nationalist" movements in
the Arab world.

general because-of its ethi-
cal nature. Every person,
particularly religious lead-
ers, ought to search for ways
to absorb and integrate its
basic claim that women are
equal."
In a detailed, compelling
series of presentations, Ms.
Greenberg treats such sub-
jects as divorce, abortion,
women's role in the
synagogue, the status of
women in religious obser-
vances, the proliferating
choices between home and
career, and other dilemmas
that modern women must
grapple with.

Knesset faction and came
out strongly against a
merger with the Herut
movement.
Prime Minister Begin
was afraid that this "rebel-
lion" in the Liberal Party
could cause the fall of his
government, which has only
a majority of one deputy in
the Knesset. He phoned
Minister Berman and told
him that such a merger
could only be carried out
with the consent of the
whole Liberal Party. He de-
nied reports that if the Lib-
erals would not consent he
would abolish the Gahal
agreement.
Against the merger
with Herut are the former
chairman of the party,
Dr. Elimelech Rimalt; the
chairman of the World
Jewish Congress -in Is-
rael, A.Z. Abramov; the
chairman of the Jewish
Agency, Arye Dulzin; and
mayors of Tel Aviv and
Ramat Gan, Shiomo
Lahat and Dr. Israel
Peled.
Recently the leader of the
Liberal Party declared in a
press conference that he
would accelerate the discus-
sion and decision in the
party about the merger with
klerut. The Liberals would
have some demands for this
concession in the United
Party.
All Cabinet members of
the Liberals (Ehrlich,
Modai, Nissim, Patt and
Sharir) besides Berman are
in favor of the merger. But
there is a strong opposition
in the party against it,
arguging that this step
would mean a quiet liquida-
tion of the Liberal Party.
