Shared Bnai Mitzva Brings
Soviet Jewish Plight to Fore

Joel Abramson and Jef-
frey Klein will share their
Bnai Mitzva at Adat
Shalom Synagogue Satur-
day morning, not only with
each other but with a Soviet
Jewish child whose family
is prohibited from emigrat-
ing.
Continuing its tradition
of twinned or shared Bnai
Mitzva to publicize the
plight of Soviet Jews, Adat
Shalom Synagogue has ar-
ranged for the two Bnai
Mitzva to share their spe-
cial day with Boris Izrailev
of Leningrad.
Boris is the son of Lev and
Irina Izrailev, who have
been trying to emigrate
from the Soviet Union since
1975.
A week before their
scheduled departure, Iz-
railev was accosted by
two unidentified men
who grabbed his brief-

case containing the exit
visas.
He complained to the
authorities, but to no avail.
Later that year, the Iz-
railevs were told that their
permission to emigrate had
been revoked for "regime
considerations" because
when Izrailev had been em-
ployed as a foreman in a
plant, he had been in charge
of secret equipment.
The congregation has
planned to send letters of
congratulations to Boris'
parents.
(Rabbi Efry Spectre of
Adat Shalom and Joel and
Jeffrey called Boris to con-
gratulate him on his Bar
Mitzva. They also spoke to
the boy's father who told
Rabbi Spectre thaat the re-.
fusniks are convinced that
it is because of the activity
and concern of American
Jewry they are still alive.)

Purim

By MADOLYN ROSENTHAL

Purim is a happy holiday
A day for Sunday school plays.
There was Haman, evil and mean
And then there was Esther, our queen.
When Haman was captured and swung from a rope
Our people rejoiced, for then there was hope.
Hope, for no more wars to be,
Just peace and tranquility.
