Soviet Jewish
Emigres Total
283 in February

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The National Conference on
Soviet Jewry reported that
only 283 Jews arrived in
Vienna from the Soviet
Union during February.
The monthly average of
emigration granted to
Soviet Jews over the past
six months hovers near 350.
In a related development,
31 first-year members of the.
House of Representatives
have formed the 97th Con-
gressional Class on Soviet
Jewry • in order to
"dramatize the plight of
prisoners of conscience who
are seeking to emigrate
from the Soviet Union."
Rep. Christopher Smith
(R-N.J.) and Rep. William
Coyne (D-Pa.) founded the
group.

in the Middle East."
Following Weinberger's
recent visit to Jordan, a
"senior official," who many
believe was Weinberger
himself, talked about a de-
sire to "redirect' ' U.S. mili-
tary policy from Israel to
moderate Arab states.
But the defense secre-
tary said that neither he
nor anyone in his party
used that word and that
he did not favor lessening
the U.S. commitment to
Israel.
Both Weinberger and
King Hussein of Jordan,
who was interviewed from
Amman on the same pro-
gram, maintained that Jor-
dan has not yet asked for
F-16 jet fighters or Hawk
anti-aircraft missiles from
the U.S.
Weinberger said that
while he and Hussein dis-
cussed arms during his visit
to Amman, there was little
discussion of F-16s. He said
he was chiefly trying to con-
vince the Jordanians, who
have signed an agreement
to purchase SAM-8 mobile
missiles from the Soviet
Union, that Moscow was
"not a very desirable
source" of weaponry.
Hussein stressed on the
program, however, that his
agreement with the Soviets
was completed before he vis-
ited Washington last No-
vember and that it will go
through.
Hussein stressed that
Jordan needs mobile mis-
siles to meet threats from
across its borders, a refer-
ence to both Israel and
Syria. He said there has
been heavy arms supplies to
the. Middle East from both
East and West while Jordan
has "slipped behind." He
maintained that Jordan
needs to be strong to "re-
store our ability- to play a
constructive role."

Vandals Hit
Jewish Cemetery
in Argentina

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Argentina's Ambassador to
the United States, Esteban
Takacs, has conveyed to the
World Jewish Congress the
official condemnation of his
government of the desecra-
tion of the Jewish cemetery
at Mar del Plata, Argenti-
na's main seaside resort.
The main cemetery of the
Jewish community of Mar
del Plata, situated some 250
miles south of Buenos Aires,
was vandalized February
25. Reportedly, the incident
involved the daubing of
swastikas in addition to
three headstones that were
overturned.

The population of Israel
in 1981 was 3,971,000.

ing in recent months for a
relaxation of that rule in the
case of Saudi Arabia.
While members of both
coalition parties concede
that the government alone
is in charge of arms experts,
they demand a voice in the
special consultative body on
the subject.
The debate has been
prompted by the pending
arms deal with the Saudis
