_ THE DETROIT JEWISH HEWS 18 Friday, March 5, 1982 Jordan Flaunts Its Anti- emitism at United Nations ► By DR. Gutter anti-Semitism, as distinguished from the po- lite type, is rarely heard at the United Nations, but it found its classic expression on Dec. 8, 1980 in a General Assembly debate. The speaker was the polished Ambassador of the Hashe- mite Kingdom of Jordan, Hazem Nuseibeh. His words echoed Hitler's Mein Kampf. A Jewish "cabal," he said, "controls, manipulates and exploits the rest of human- ity by controlling the money and wealth of the world." The Jordanian Ambas- sador went on to say that "people like Lord Rothschild every day, in iron-clad secrecy, decide and flash round the world how high the price of gold should be on each particular day." He concluded: "It is a well-known fact that the Zionists are the richest people in the world and control much of its de- stiny." Western members of the General Assembly were stunned by what the New York Times editorially called "Jordan's anti- Semitic bilge," all the more so since the next day (Dec. 9) marked the anniversary of the Genocide convention and the following day would be commemorated for the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The episode glaringly il- luminates the character of a regime which some in Washington today would cover with its military man- tle and provide it some of the most advanced and de- structive weaponry in our technological arsenal. WILLIAM KOREY are prepared to forget when a country espouses "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in the world's major forum. The Jordanian Ambas- sador's remarks were not the first nor the last that would give expression to anti-Jewish bigotry. On March 16, 1979, Nuseibeh raised questions in the Se- curity Council as to whether "subservient Gentiles" had been "born into this world to serve the aims of the 'mas- ter race." Jews were iden- tified by him as either the "master race" or "omnipo- tent race." Then, after referring to Rothschild and a Jewish "cabal in London," he asked "how can the bil- lions of struggling human beings ... compete with such awesome powers." Nuseibeh concluded that he was certain "that the Bnai Brith, the Gestapo of the Zionist movement, will put me on their black list as an anti-Semitic ...' Over the years, according to Israeli UN delegates, Nuseibeh has referred to the people of the Jewish state as a "bubonic plague" and as a "cancerous growth." If his language be- came somewhat more cir- cumspect after December 1980, when the press began to take note of its vulgarity, his colleagues in the Jorda- nian delegation revealed no hesitancy to express their real attitude. Thus on Nov. 11, 1981, in the course of a debate in the Assembly concerning the destruction of the Baghdad nuclear reactor, Jordanian delegate Faris told the UN chamber that Zionism is "racism insofar as it teaches that Jews, generation after generation, are the masters of the world and the chosen people of God." Nor is the anti-Semitism reserved only for the UN spokesmen of the Hashe- mite Kingdom. Jordan is probably the only state in the world today whose Civil Law No. 6 (paragraph 3) specifies that a Jew cannot be a citizen. It reads: "Any man will be a Jordanian subject if he is not Jewish." The Jordanian school sys- tem teaches hostility to Jews and even cites approv- ingly from the "Protocols." Thus, a third-year high school text, "The Pales- tine Problem" (p. 41) cites the "Protocols" as the source of the following approved citation: "Our (the Jews') slogan is feirce and deceit and with these means we shall achieve our object without being deterred from using bribery, lies and treachery." • The "Protocols" is also cited as recommending that the Zionists use "corrup- tion." The quoted source is the Bible, which "justified intercourse between the two spies and the harlot from Jericho." A fifth-year junior high school work urges students "to guard the Holy Land and not to let the Jews stay in any part of the country." In- deed, during Jordanian rule of the West Bank and the Old City of Jerusalem (1949-1967), access to the holy places was barred to Jews and the mass desec- ration of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries pre- vailed. Discrimination against Jews is operational on a government level. Over the years Jordan had banned a number of outstanding Jewish performing artists, including Danny Kaye, Edward G. Robinson, Paul Newman, Elizabeth Taylor and Isaac Stern. opera Verdi's "Nabucco" could not be performed because it presents an event "in a way that sheds a favora- ble light on the Jews." Radio Amman, on Sept_ 22, 1978, denounced _"these impure, accursed and treacherous Jews" and called for a jihad against them. Jews are not the only vic- tims in the human rights field. A 1980 Amnesty In- ternational report indicates that martial law is still in force in Jordan, under which political prisoners are either held for long periods of time without trial or are brought before a mili- tary court without basic legal safeguards. But it is at the UN where Jordan's egregious conduct is especially apparent. Its overt anti-Semitism is flag- rant and unequalled. Not to be overlooked, in addition, is its anti-American post- ure. The Abu Eain case was strongly pressed by the Jor- danian delegation, which accused the U.S. judicial system of bias. It was Jordan that led the fight on the Golan Heights issue in the Secu- rity Council in opposition to the U.S. And Jordan joined others in an un- precedented assault upon the U.S. for casting a veto. The notorious and unprecedented General Assembly resolution of Feb. 5 "strongly de- plored" the U.S. exercise of its veto rights. The anti-Americanism may simply reflect its Hitler-like perception of Jews. Nuseibeh's infamous address of December 8, 1980, contained the follow- ing formulation: "Indeed, in the United States itself, which has a national income of upwards of $2,000 billion per annum, and, while millions of hard-working God-fearing Americans are unemployed, the Zionists own a lion's share of that great abun- dance." This is how bigotry is pro- vided a sanction in the world community.
