Mitterrand Hears Israeli Viewpoint from Begin

557 5145

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Premier Menahem Begin
launched into his talks here
Wednesday with visiting
French President Mitter-
rand with a lengthy and de-
tailed exposition on the
dangers of a Palestinian
state to Israel.
At one stage in their con-
versation the premier called
in Aluf Yehoshua Saguy,
chief of army intelligence,
to buttress the Israeli
arguments on this key sub-
ject.
Begin's press spokesman
Uri Porat said this had been
Mitterrand's "first opportu-
nity" to hear Israel's case at
the highest level, and that
he had been "very im-
pressed."

Mitterrand said he does
not agree with all of Israel's
policies, but observed, "If I
had to approve the policies
of every country I went to, I
wouldn't go anywhere."
It is believed he expressed
to the Pope the same views
about Israel and the Middle
East situation as he related
to the journalists. The Pope
reportedly mentioned the
Vatican's well known posi-
tion in favor of "inter-
nationalization" of the holy
places in Jerusalem.
Last week, Mitterrand
met with World Jewish
Congress President Edgar
Bronfman. Bronfman then
flew to Israel to confer with

Prime Minister Begin. A
spokesman would only say
that "international issues of
mutual concern" had been
discussed and "a meeting of
the minds had been
achieved."
