President Reagan and Is- raeli Prime Minister Menahem Begin sent per- sonal messages of congratu- lations to the entertainer; Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley issued an official proclamation declaring a "Danny Kaye Day" while citing his long history of raising funds both for UN- ICEF and for symphony or- chestras and musicians' pension funds throughout the world. The highlight of the evening was the dedica- tion of a "Danny Kaye Wing" at the university's Medical Education Cen- ter in Israel. Major Gen- eral Shlorno Gazit, president of Ben-Gurion University, presented Kaye with a 3,000-year- old artifact uncovered during archeological ex- cavations. It was a long way to star- dom for 69-year-old, Brooklyn-born Kaye who started in summer theaters, toured the U.S. and the Orient in a vaudeville act, and for a time worked as an errand boy for the father of Sylvia Fine, a lady he mar- ried in 1941. His major break had come with a tongue-twister in Moss Hart's "Lady-in the Dark," . 1. ,/ .5 11„1. ,1, •!: DRYCLEANING SPECIAL MEN'S or LADIE'S Si PLAIN SWEATERS 25 offer ends 3-13-82 "Vava a a`Va ":"ViVeln Above Special Honored by The Following Drycleaners FERNDALE I OAK PARK I DETROIT O'DAY CLEANERS • FREEDOM CLEANERS I PROGRESS CLEANERS 1111 W. 9 Mile 24681 Coolidge 19377 Livernois 546-3400 545-1300 II 341-0540 mmimememolewonmininnswwmploiewwinsome PONTIAC PONTIAC PONTIAC I FOX CLEANERS 719 W. Sylvia developed into a pianist and lyricist and wrote his material for many years. Kaye jumped into full stardom on Broadway with "Let's Face It" — but the movie role went to Bob Hope. It was Samuel Goldwyn who brought him to Hollywood for "Up in Arms," a musical that was entirely different from any- thing the public had seen before and wholly fashioned for the eccentricities and ef- fervescent style of the per- former. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" brought out Kaye's sensitivity. There were "A Song is Born," "The Inspec- tor General," "On the Ri- viera," "Knock on Wood," "Court Jester," "Merry An- drews," "On the Double," and the whimsical charm of his "Hans Christian Ander- sen." Kaye's first brush with television came in 1956 when he starred in a segment of Edward R. Murrow's "See It Now," labeled "The Secret Life of Danny Kaye" which had to do with his work for UNICEF and won the George Foster Peabody Award and an Emmy nomination. Subsequently, he made his first .Las Vegas night- club appearance, did a TV special, made a USO holi- day tour of Japan and Korea, performed as guest conductor in Boston, De- troit, Los Angeles and Washington, visited the Soviet Union at the behest of the State Department and headlined theater bills as far apart as Honolulu and Denver. "The Danny Kaye Show" started on CBS in Sep- tember 1963 and ended four years later when Kaye de- cided it was time to move on to other things. During the next five years, he went to Israel to visit hospitalized Israeli soldiers after the Six-Day War of 1967. In Israel, he performed on stage and conducted orches- tras, visited children's day camps and kibutzim, spend- ing much time with every segment of the population, from the military and polit- ical leadership to the simple man on the street. He toured three continents conducting the Israel Youth Symphony.
