graphs and films document-
ing Jewish life in pre-war
Eastern Europe.
Josh Waletzky, who is di-
recting the experimental
project, said the existing
card-catalogue system of
listing films and the YIVO
collection of 120,000 photo-
graphs was cumbersome
and presented problems of
finding specific films and
photos. He said the agency's
collection of films was grow-
ing constantly.
He said a grant of
$74,000 from the Charles
Revson Foundation was
funding the six-month
project which began in
January.
The videodisc is a 12-inch
round disc on which infor-
mation — in this case, films
and photos — can be re-
corded. The videodisc differs
from commercial videofilm
casettes because the infor-
imation recorded on the vid-
eodisc is read by a laser
beam. The laser beam
makes it possible to "read"
the recorded material very
rapidly and to provide ac-
cess to any portion of a re-
corded film almost instan-
taneously.
Film in YIVO's collection
is first transfered to a video
tape master and the disc
manufacturer then pro-
duces the disc from the mas-
ter. This is done by a com-
mercial firm, since both the
technology and the cost of

the machines for such prod-
uction is far beyond YIVO
resources, according to
Waletzky.
The next step is to find
some individual acquainted
with the time and place and
events of a particular film.
As that witness comments
on some aspect of the vid-
eotaped film, his or her
comments are videotaped. A
computer attached to the
television screen showing
the film keeps track of what
happens to the film during
the course of the interview.
The film may be stopped,
re-run or portions skipped
relative to the comments of
the witness.
Waletzky said that if
the new technology does
not meet YIVO expecta-
tions, YIVO will still have
the videotape and that
"we will pursue efforts to
find a better way."
He added YIVO was con-
tinuing actively to seek out
films for its collection, par-
ticularly— though not ex-
clusively — about Jewish
life in pre-war Eastern
Europe. .
