Koch Blasts UN, Soviets

NEW YORK — Mayor
Edward Koch of New York
has been making headlines
for two weeks in a continu-
ing war of words with the
• United Nations and the
° Soviet Union over the UN
General Assembly's con-
demnation of Israel for an-
nexing the Golan Heights.
Koch said he wanted to

JERUSALEM — Pales-
tine Liberation Organiza-
tion chief Yasir Arafat
called last week on Arab na-
tions bordering Israel to
permit PLO terrorists to use
their territory.
He was apparently refer-
ring to Syria and Jordan.

A UN official who re-
plied publicly to Koch's
statements was repri-
manded by Secretary
General Javier Perez de
Cuellar. However, the
Secretary General post-
poned a previously-
scheduled, get-
acquainted luncheon
with Koch.

Solidarity Rally
for Soviet Jews

NEW. YORK (JTA) —
Some 150,000 people are
expected to take part in the
11th annual Solidarity
Sunday for Soviet Jewry
May 2, it was announced by
the Greater New York Con-
ference on Soviet Jewry
which sponsors the event.
In Vienna, a final agree-
ment has ended the dif-
ferences between Austrian
authorities and the Jewish
Agency regarding Soviet
Jewish emigrants being
processed through Austria.
According to the Interior
Ministry, the agreement is
in accord with Austrian law
which demands that every
emigrant has the right to
chose his or her country of
immigration freely. If they
want to go to a country other
than Israel, they have to
leave the agency's premises
and go to the nearest police
station where they receive
detailed information about
Jewish and non-Jewish aid
organizations which help
them to go to Western coun-
tries.

The Russian newspaper
Pravda became involved
this week, accusing Koch of
seeking to "curry favor with
the Zionist lobby of New
York." Koch retorted by cal-
ling the Soviets "those Red
nuts" and calling for a re-
duction in U.S. dues.
