Bill Stead, marketing di-
rector of GM International
Services, the Grand Met
subsidiary which sent the
letter, said, "It was not the
first time such a letter had
been sent. We were consid-
ering trading in Saudi
Arabia and we would have
to ensure that the supplier
was able to work there."
"The contract was never
concluded, but in view of
U.S. business opinion that
the Seagram bid for the
Conoco oil conglomerate
last summer (in the same
month as Grand Met's
take-over of Intercontinen-
tal) was unsuccessful be-
cause the Seagram chair-
man, Edgar Bronfman, is an
active supporter of Israel, it
is presumed that the usual
undertakings were given
locally," Frazer reported.
Grand Met issued a

LONDON — Grand Met-
ropolitan, the multi-
national business group
headed by Jewish busi-
nessman Sir Maxwell
Joseph, admitted last week
that it has been willing to
conduct business in the
Middle East in accordance
with the terms of the Arab
boycott of Israel.
According to an article by
Jenni Frazer in the London
Jewish Chronicle, Grand
Met, which has been work-
ing in the Middle East for a
long time, will lose its last
Jewish director when Sir
Maxwell retires as chair-
man in September, leaving
no Jewish board members
and no Jews in high levels of
management.
In August last year,
Grand Met acquired the In-
tercontinental Group of
hotels from Pan Am, which
has never operated flights
to Israel.

Travel, Yericla
Focus of Youth

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — A
Yediot Ahronot study shows
that a majority of Israeli
youth have a desire to travel
outside Israel. Most prefer
to visit Europe.
A second study of kibutz
youth showed that only 16
percent expressed firm op-
position to emigration of Is-
raelis. Some 77 percent jus-
tified it or at least expressed
some understanding for the
yordim.
