Danny Raskin's

The Best of Everything

WHEN YOU HEAR the
name Pumperniks, you
might automatically think
of delicatessen because of its
nationwide note, especially
in Florida.
However, on Orchard
Lake Road and 10 Mile,
there is a Pumperniks that
is eery far from being a deli-
catessen Nothing on
the menu (except perhaps a
grilled Reuben sandwich)
even suggests this type of
operation.
It is called Pumperniks
Bar-B-Q . . . with em-
phasis on the rotisserie ribs
and chicken . . . plus Mexi-
can specialties.

Opened Dec. 16, Pum-
perniks occupies the
former Friendly Ice
Cream parlor . . . with
almost 125 seating in an
all-booth atmosphere
. . . except for tables in a
separate no-smoking
room area . . . It is
owned by Bob
Mihailovich and Danny
Stovanovich.

The excellent lightly-
breaded huge jumbo fried
shrimps . . . and delicious
round-cut potatoes fried
with the skins . . . were
served by smiling, efficient
and personable waitress
Pattie Fitzgerald . . . Pat-
tie also brought me a piece
of that wonderful blueberry
cheesecake made by Bob's
wife, Rita . . . Too bad we
didn't have room for the
specialty of Danny's wife,
Lidia . . . She makes the
yummy strawberry
shortcake.
Not being a lover of the
conventional red cocktail
sauce served almost
everywhere, I was
graciously brought_ the
necessary ingredients . . .
and happily mixed my own
light pinkish cocoction.
Pumperniks is open seven
days a week . . . Monday
through Sunday, 10 a.m. to
12 midnight . . . Friday
and Saturday til 2 a.m.
The next time you drive
by Orchard Lake Road and
10 Mile . . . and see the
sign Pumperniks . . . look
more closely notice the
bar-b-q under it . . . not
delicatessen.
THERE ARE LOTS of
old friends at Bouzouki
Lounge on Lafayette in
Greektown . . . But three
you'll readily recognize are
stalwarts of the dining and
drinking scene . . . Nick
and Jim Merkouris spent 15
years each behind the bar at
Carl's Chop House on Grand
River . . . and Chef Pete
Laskari used to own the
Athenian Cuisine on South-
field and 10 Mile.
Brothers Nick and Jim
took over the 12-year-old
Bouzouki Lounge five years
ago . . . At that time, it sea-
ted 170 . . . Seating at the
popular Greektown nitery
has twice been expanded
since then.
The Grecian authenticity
is exemplified by the many
countrymen who come there
to enjoy spirited Greek
music, singing, belly danc-
ing . . . and the dishes put
out by Pete.

STAGE DELICATES-
SEN and Restaurant open-
ing at The Boardwalk
Shopping Center, Orchard
Lake Road south of Maple,
will be another Jack and
Harriet Goldberg produc-
tion . . The popular lunch
and dinner spot on Nine
Mile in Oak Park will re-
main at its present site.
DOUG JACOBS and the
Red Garter Band which has
been a very fine Dixieland
musical fixture around
town for so many years . . .
was President Ronald
Reagan's favorite band
while he was governor of
California . . . In San
Francisco, they played 80
percent of his campaign bits
. . . plus birthday parties.
In Detroit, during the Re-
publican Convention, Doug
and the band did their
things at Joe Louis Arena
. . . plus Vice President
George Bush's victory
party.
The group has been at
Eden Glen restaurant on W.
Big Beaver between Crooks
and Coolidge, the last five
years with its Sunday New
Orleans Jazz Brunch . . .
and carry the lively fun
rhythms over to its Sixth
Annual Mardi Gras Cele-
bration this Tuesday.
