Brandeis paid an annual re- tainer for 23 years to Felix Frankfurter while Brandeis was a member of the Sup- reme Court in order for Frankfurter to pursue Brandeis' goals in the area of public policy. Brandeis felt ethically constrained publicly taking a stand on issues of the day while he was a member of Israel Cost of Living Up; Spending Cuts Are Urged JERUSALEM (JTA) — Finance Minister Yoram Aridor is expected to renew his demands for sharp re- ductions in government spending in the face of an unexpected upward surge of the cost-of-living index last month, following a down- ward trend last year. The Central Bureau of Statistics reported that the COL for January rose by a record 8.3 percent, the highest increase for that month since the bureau began recording statistics when Israel was founded in 1948. The COL index rose by no more than 7.3 percent in January of 1980 and 1981. The bureau said last month's increase was caused largely by price hikes resulting from sharp cuts in government sub- sidies. The January rise was alarming because it pushed the annual rate of inflation up to 127 per- cent compared to 101 percent last year. Aridor has stated his in- tention to bring Israel's in- flation rate down from tri- ple to double-digit propor- tions. His goal this year is a 90 percent rate. U.S. Joins MFO for the Sinai TEL AVIV (JTA) — The American contingent in the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) for Sinai will include 600 troops from the crack 82nd Airborne Division, Defense Minister Ariel Sharon was informed. Four European powers — Britain, France, Italy and Holland — also will con- tribute to the MFO. Australia is understood to be ready to provide 10 helicopters and their crews. Other participants in the MFO are Colombia, Uruguay and Fiji. the court. The arrangement was re- vealed in 300 letters, mostly unpublished, obtained from the Library of Congress. The letters were obtained by Bruce A. Murphy, an assistant professor of politi- cal science at Pennsylvania State University. Oxford University Press is publishing Mur- phy's book on the subject this month, "The Brandeis/Frankfurther Connection: The Secret Political Activities of Two Supreme Court Jus- tices." Frankfurther was ap- pointed to the Supreme Court in 1939, the same year that Brandeis retired from the court. WE HAVE EXPANDED 10 FOLD! VISIT OUR NEW HOME AT 8223 W.
