One of Israel's outstand-
ing features has been the
kibutz movement. Al-
though it consists of less
than four percent of the
population, its impact on
the state has been consid-
erable.
Arnica Lieblich, a teacher
of psychology at Hebrew
University, has made a val-

study of one of the largest

Following kibutz policy,
the children were from in-
fancy kept apart from par-
ents much of the time.
The motto of the kibutz
remained "maximum

which they deeply dis-

dissatisfaction and res-

pseudonymous title of
"Kibutz Mekom" (Panth-
eon).
Instead of writing a con-
ventional history, she has
edited 61 tape-recorded in-
terviews — out of more than
100 — which provide a
realistic and fascinating
perspective of the nature,
development, achievement,
and complexity of the
kibutz. The book's several
sections make vividly clear
the kibutz's early difficult
beginning, its gradual
growth and maturity, and
its present character and
condition.
In 1928, 17 Israeli
youths decided to start a
kibutz. They had no capi-
tal and no agricultural
experience, and the land

they selected was marshy
and the available water
brackish. They were,
however, strongly moti-
vated by faith and dedi-

cation.

the hardships and sac-

and satisfaction, how they
persisted despite discourag-
ing defeats and material
handicaps. Each, in his or
her way, stressed the
idealism which motivated
their efforts at establish-
ment.
They adhered strictly to
the kibutz principles of

equality and mutuality.
They tended, uncon-
sciously, to repress their in- •
