A WOMAN OF VALOR: To be elected president of
the New York United Jewish Appeal — the largest compo-
nent of the national UJA is a very great honor. This high
office had been held by personalities like Edward M.
Warburg, William Rosenwald, Jack Weiler and other
prominent Jewish leaders. This honor has now been bes-
towed, for the first time, upon a woman who is not only a
leader in the New York Jewish community but also nation-
ally.
She is Elaine Winik, popularly known by her first
name in all the communities throughout the United States
— as well as in Israel — and affectionately called so by all
who know her.
A lady of great charm, of dynamic energy, of unlimited
devotion to the United Jewish Appeal, to the Joint Distri-
bution Committee and to Israel, Elaine Winik is also
blessed with being a brilliant speaker. She presents the
UJA case to audiences convincingly, with an emotion that
comes to her in a natural way — no prepared speeches.
AN INSPIRING EXAMPLE: In Israel, Elaine Winik
knows every nook and corner of the country. She visited the
country more than 40 times since the establishment of the
Jewish state. In addition to taking a deep interest in the
general humanitarian needs of Israel, she also takes a
special interest in raising funds — over and above contribu-
tions to UJA — for building high schools and pre-
kindergarten institutions. She was instrumental in build-
ing a high school in Dimona. Three pre-kindergartens in
Israel carry her name. Children in Dimona call her
"mother," and the mayor of the town made her the first
honorary citizen of Dimona.
A FORMIDABLE TASK: Happy over the fact that
she is the first woman in the 43-year history of the UJA to
be elected president of the UJA of Greater New York,
Elaine is also very conscious of the obligations which this
highly important post carries.
The New York UJA conducts its fund-raising jointly
with the New York Federation of Jewish Philanthropies
which also has a woman, Mrs. Laurence A. Tisch, as
president for the first time in its history. These organiza-
tions yielded $86 million in last year's campaign, with the
larger part going to the UJA. The two women leaders are
now determined to raise more than last year.

VIENNA (JTA) — The
State Police are conducting
a house-to-house check of
the estimated 4,600 Arabs
presently living in Austria.
Special squads visited
about 900 Arabs last week
to examine their visas and
residence permits. Many
were said to have no valid
•
papers.
The check was ordered by
the government following
renewed threats against the
lives of Austrian political
figures by an extremist
Palestinian group, Al Asifa.
Al Asifa was implicated in
the attack on the Jewish
,community center and
synagogue here last August
in which two persons were
killed and 18 were
wounded, and in the assas-
sination of Heinz Nittel, a
Vienna City Council
member, last May.

Moynihan Warns
of Aati-Semitism
You can't pass up this sale of formica cabinets!
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Deputy Premier David Levy
hotly defended Project Re-
newal against charges by
opposition Knesset mem-
bers that it has become a
bureaucratic mess.
Levy, who is also Minister
of Housing, invited the cri-
tics to tour some Project Re-
newal neighborhoods with
him and after that, he said,
he would agree to a general
debate on the issue.
Project Renewal is a slum
clearance and rehabilit-
tion effort undertaken
the Israel government and
the Jewish Agency in
Partnership with overseas
Jewry.
HOUSTON (JTA) — Sen.
Daniel Moynihan (D-NY)
warned of increasing anti-
Semitism throughout the
globe and called on Jewish
community leaders "to
realize the intent of those
who would destroy us before
it was too late."
Sen. Moynihan's remarks
were made to some 500
leaders at the United
Jewish Appeal Southwest
Regional Conference. •
