Germany Exaggerating Neo-Nazis?

Public concern over
neo-Nazi violence has been
heightened by the trial of a
Nazi group headed by Man-
fred Roeder, a former
lawyer, which is being con-
ducted in the Stammheim
security prison near
Stuttgart. Another trial is

tice Minister of
Rhineland-Pfalz has ac-
cused the Bonn government
of exaggerating the political
significance of neo-Nazi vio-
lence in West Germany and
giving undue publicity to
right-wing extremists.

(JTA) — United States Am-
bassador Jeane Kirkpatrick
accused the UN of laying
the ground work for the ex-
pulsion of Israel from the
world body and warned of
"serious consequences" if
any further steps are taken
against Israel.
Kirkpatrick told the na-
tional executive committee
of the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai Brith that
the UN General Assembly
resolution adopted Feb. 5
which called for the total
isolation of Israel for its an-
nexation of the Golan
Heights went "beyond lan-
guage used at any time: -r
the past against. a: Tnenilier
state" — including South
Africa.
South Africa, she pointed
out, has been barred from
the General Assembly since
1974 but its right to mem-
bership has not been chal-
lenged.
Kirkpatrick said that
the United Nations con-
tributes 25 percent of the
United Nations regular
budget — more than the
combined contributions
of all 86 counties, includ-
ing the Soviet Union,

Druze residents of the
Golan Heights began a gen-
' "eral strike Sunday tirpro-
test the arrests of four
Druze leaders accused of in-
citement against Israel.
They are being held in
administrative detention on
orders signed by Defense
Minister Ariel Sharon.
The four arrested are
Kamal Kanj Abu Salah, a
former member of the Sy-
rian parliament; his cousin
Sulieman Abu Salah; the
latter's son, Konj, and
Mahmoud Safadi.
All are residents of Maj-
dal Shams, the largest
Druze village in the Golan
Heights and leaders of the
two major Druze clans in
the region. They are Syrian
citizens.
Kamal Kanj, sentenced to
23 years imprisonment in
1972 as a Syrian spy, was
pardoned a year later in a
prisoner exchange deal. He
and Safadi were detained
four months ago for organiz-
ing protests against the dis-
tribution of Israeli identity
cards to Druze in the Golan
Heights.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Arab merchants in East
Jerusalem called a general
strike last week to protest
what they claimed were ex-
cessive taxes levied on them
by the Israeli authorities.
According to police re-
ports, about 65 percent of
the businesses which shut
down last Thursday morn-
ing re-opened later in the
day after merchants were
warned that court orders
would be issued against
them.
Meanwhile in Tel Aviv, a
strike by some 6,000 munic-
ipal workers throughout the
country ended Feb. 9 after
the government agreed to
allow wage increases for
lower paid workers.
