THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Soviets Undermining Rights L (Continued from Page 1) setting fire to synagogues in order to settle in Israel. In addition, anti- Jewish material has been distributed to recruits of the Red Army and pub- lished in official journals of the Soviet armed forces. The Soviets also export anti-Semitism to Arab, Af- rican and other Third World countries. Writings of out- spoken Soviet anti-Semites have been widely distrib- uted by the Palestine Liber- on Organization and dis- in English throughout the English- speaking world. "Jewish history is deleted from Soviet elementary and secondary schools," Kam- pelman stated. "Indeed, the Russian pogroms of the late 19th Century against the Jews are justified in a Soviet publication as part of the class struggle." Kampelman stressed that "the Soviet Union — with the third largest Jewish populatioain the world — is the only country with a Jewish population in which there is not a single ap- proved Jewish school and no means for teaching Jewish history and tradition." In recent weeks, over 80 teachers of Hebrew in Mos- cow alone were threatened with prosecution and banishment if they contin- ued teaching, he said. "Invasion Without Arms," a book by Vla- dimir Begun published in 150,000 copies in 1977 and republished in 1979, characterized the Torah as "an unsurpassed textbook (of) hypocrisy, treachery, perfidy and moral degeneracy — all the base human qual- ities." Begun writes, . H "Jewish and Christian hypocrites alike keep si- lent over this." Another book, "Judaism and Zionism," by Trofim Kichko, soon to be pub- lished, pretends to "unmask the criminal activities of various Zionist organiza- tions and Zionist-oriented Judaism." A previous Kichko book written in 1964 was so virulently anti-Semitic it provoked in- ternational protests, includ- ing some from major West- ern Communist parties. The soviets were forced to with- draw it for "erroneous statements." Kampelman also singled out the "White Book," is- sued by Soviet authorities in 1979, subtitled, "Espion- age and Deception in the Name of Defense for Human Rights." This book is filled with preposterous accusa- tions and anti-Semitic at- tacks on Soviet Jewish ac- tivities and Western corre- spondents of Jewish origin. "Even after this despicable work received worldwide condemnation," Kampel- man said, "a second edition was released in December 1979." Meanwhile, an official of the World Zionist Organiza- tion has warned Israeli leaders that the Soviet Union has embarked on a new anti-Zionist offensive which will attempt to use the words of prominent world Jewish leaders to dis- credit Zionism and Israel. At the same time, El- liott Abrams, U.S. Assis- tant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs, said at a Geneva press conference that the issue of Soviet Jewry will be brought up by the Ameri- Education Boom in Mideast JERUSALEM (ZINS) — The total number of stu- dents enrolled at all levels of education in Israel now stands at 1,360,000, of whom 1,164,000 are Jews and 196,500 are Arabs. This year the educational system is staffed with 65,000 teachers. On the West Bank (and excluding the Arabs in -the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights) there are now 280,000 students, compared with 260,000 last year, and 137,000 in 1967, when Is- rael took over control of those areas. There are now 9,271 Arab teachers on the West Bank. In this connection the President of the University of the Negev, Shlomo Gazit, pointed out that the number of university students in the Arab world continues to grow at a remarkable rate. There are now 1,400,000 students at the university level in Arab countries compared with only 55,000 in the state of Israel. Gazit went on to say that only 10 years ago Israel had 13,000 stu- training dents in technological fields corn- pared with only 15,000 in all of the Arab world. However, within the last decade the number of students in technological training in Israel in- creased by 57 percent and there are now 20,000 of them in the country. By contrast, the rate of _increase in that field for the Arab world was 600 percent and there are now 90,000 students training in technological fields in all of the Arab countries. NCJW Program NEW YORK — For more than a decade, the Home In- struction Program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) of the NCJW Re- search Institute for Innova- tion in Education at the He- brew University of Jerusalem has meant a suc- cessful start in school for thousands of disadvantaged Israeli children. To focus attention on 80 years- of Jewish National Fund activities in developing the Land of Israel and securing the future of the State of Israel. To stress the fact that JNF is a major contributor in improving and maintaining the quality of Israel's environment. JNF fights desolation, decay, waste and wilderness. To reclaim more land for outposts in the most vulnerable areas. To insure a Jewish stronghold in the Galilee, an area vital to thefuture security and economic self-sufficiency of the State. The Galilee has only a 30% Jewish population. To help transform the Negev desert into vital Jewish communities so that 10,000 Israeli inhabitants in the Sinai settlements may be relocated, and their lives rebuilt, along the new borders with Egypt. To encourage inscriptions in the Honor Roll of the Jewish People — the Golden Book in Jerusalem. To place another thousand JNF Blue Boxes, the symbol of a nation reborn, in Greater Detroit and Michigan Jewish homes. To plant more trees in Israel. Israel needs more trees. Trees represent the rekindled strength and lifeblood of the land. To remind Jews to remember JNF in their. Wills, thus not only linking their names forever with the land of Israel, but their legacy helps ALL of Israel. We have before us a colossal task. The JNF snow called upon to strengthen existing positions and to prepare a new wave of and settlements in Negev and in the Galilee so vital for the future of Israel.
