Retention of Traditions by Youth
an Inspiration for the Future

If Jewish continuity is
dependent on our youth,
then we are in good hands.
This conclusion was
drawn after having been
asked to be a counselor at a
youth retreat last weekend
at Camp Tamarack, held
under the auspices of Cong.
Beth Shalom.
The weekend retreat,
whose theme was "Jew To-

day, Who Tomorrow, - fo-
cused on the observance of
Shabat and kashrut, while
at the same time encourag-
ing the youth to voice their
opinions on interfaith dat-
ing.

The cultural pre-
sentations began follow-
ing Minha services at
Beth Shalom. A film was
shown about teenagers
discussing the pros and
cons about interfaith dat-
ing, but it left the youth-
ful audience with a ques-
tion at the end, which the
youth considered at an
evening discussion.

At Tamarack that eve-
ning, following dinner,
zemirot and Shabat serv-
ices, the teenagers, about 40
in all, discussed interfaith
dating after seeing a socio-
drama on the subject.
The teens were nearly
unanimous in opposing in-
terfaith dating. It was
encouraging to know that
they are Jewishly aware
and dedicated to upholding
the traditions they learned
at home, in religious school,
in the synagogue.

The ruach (spirit)
which pervaded the serv-
ices also was evident in
the singing of Shabat
songs. An "Adon Olam
singdown," an activity in
which teams competed
by trying to apply the
greatest number of popu-
lar melodies to Adon
Olam, drew enthusiastic
response from the youth.

Yet, Beth Shalom is not
alone in providing this
Shabat experience for its
youth. Cong. Beth Achim,
Cong. Shaarey Zedek, Adat
Shalom Synagogue, Cong.
Bnai Moshe and Cong. Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses also
provide for a Shabat expres-
sion for the younger set.
Certainly there are winter
sports and games. The
weekends aren't only dedi-
cated to prayer, but the
youth pursue both with
equal enthusiasm. And that
is heartening.
Sure, kids will be kids,
and breaking curfew for the
younger ones was high on
their priority list of
weekend achievements. But
they never forgot the reason
they were at the retreat, to
preserve the spirit of
Shabat.
If last weekend is any
indication, the spirit of
Shabat will be retained for a
long, long time.

What was more impres-
sive than their adherence to
the traditions was the pro-
fessionalism with which
they conducted Shabat serv-
ices. Even though the rabbi
and cantor were on hand,
they took a back seat to the
teens who led the services
like pros. Only a handful
were graduates of or stu-
dents in the day schools —
most were in the public
schools — but the devotion
and enthusiasm with which
they took leading roles in
the morning, afternoon and
Havdala services was in-
spiring and commendable.
