RAMAT GAN (ZINS) —
Emotions ran high at-a
stormy symposium held re-
cently on the relations be-
tween Israel's Sephardic
and Ashkenazic com-
munities. Dr. Gabriel Ben-
Simchon, an immigrant
from Morocco, gave expres-
sion to the deep feelings of
frustration felt by his com-
munity:
"When we made our aliya
to Israel," said Dr. Ben-
Simchon, "we lost our reli-
gious faith and our Father.
On arriving here we were
dressed in khaki. In place of
religious tradition we were
given socialism, which has
proven to be huge fraud. In
the end we were left without
God and without socialism.
"We have abandoned the
traditional Moroccan wed-
ding ceremony; instead we
have received a culture of
`synthetic plastic.' "

HICKORY S
Perres spoke in a more op-
timistic vein. He pointed
out that 20 percent of native
births are now the offspring
of so-called "mixed mar-
riages."
"There will come a
time," said Dr. Perres,
"when there will be a har-
monious and compatible Is-
raeli society." He pointed to
the intriguing fact that the
percentage of divorces
among so--called "mixed
couples" is very low.
Joining the discussion,
newsman Shmuel Segev,
also a Jew of Oriental ori-
gin, said that the Sephar-
dim have to remember that
although they may com-
prise a majority within the
state of Israel, they are still
a minority within the
Jewish people. "We must
cooperate with the Jews of
the Diaspora. Without such
collaboration there is no fu-
ture for the Jewish people."
Member of Knesset Zvi
Keseh said that while the
Ashkenazic Jews may have
created this state, it was the
Oriental Jewish community
that built it. That is a basis
for cooperation between
both communities, he
added.
