LOUISVILLE (JTA) — In
an unusually candid report
on the adjustment of Rusz
sian Jewish settlers in a
Jewish community, the
Louisville Federation has
disclosed that Russian Jews
who have settled here "are
not particularly sad to
leave" in a search for jobs
elsewhere.
The current issue of
"Community," the publica-
tion of the Jewish Commu-
nity Federation, contrasted
the "excitement and eager-
ness" with which the Jewish
community welcomed the
first Russian Jewish
settlers in 1973 with the
attitude of the community
at the present time.
Since 1973, some 330
Russian Jews have come to
Louisville "the better life,"
religious freedom, economic
prosperity and friends" for
which they have emigrated
from the Soviet Union.
In response to the ques-
tion, "why are so many
'leaving?" Ruth Paley of
the Louisville Jewish
Family and Vocational
Service (JFVS) said the
most frequent reason the
departing Russian Jews
give is lack of good job
opportunities.
She said "many Russians
came here with fine job
qualifications and experi-
ence. They cannot find com-
parable work in Louisville,
so they are moving to Hous-
ton, Dallas, Boston, New
York and Pittsburgh for a
better job."
The publication reported
that 80 Russian Jews have
left in the last few months to
look for jobs because the
Louisville economy "is bad"
and many large local em-
ployers "are laying off
American workers with
seniority, so they are not
likely to keep or hire Rus-
sians at this time."
Commenting that the
Russian -Jews "are free to
move in America just like
anyone else if the opportu-
nity presents itself," Mrs.
Paley added "there is a net-
work among the Russian
Jews of friends and rela-
tives which they utilize to
aid in their moves." She said
the local Jewish family
agencies do not have the
funds to help the departing
emigres.
Asked whether she
thought the departures
would continue when the
local economic picture

said, "The Russian Jews
are not particularly sad
to leave. The (Jewish)
community as a whole
has not been friendly or
open."

with the Russian Jewish
settlers has been the voltrki=
teer resettlement commit-
tee of the Louisville Bnai
Brith Lodge. That commit-
tee has worked with the
JFVS, the federation, and
the Louisville section of the
National Council -of Jewish,
Women. Readers were I
urged to join a home hospi-
tality nucleus to keep Rus-
sian Jews "coming to 3
friendly, caring ish
community."

She added "Certainly
there are isolated instances
of friendship, but for the
most part, the Russian Jews
have been the stepchildren
of the community, which
has ignored them. It is
really sad, because the
community has missed out
on a unique opportunity to
form friendships with other
intelligent Jews."
She reported that, in a
new effort to change the
image of Louisville's Jewish
community relative to the
emigres, steps have been
taken to offer home hospi-
tality to the Russian jews.
One resident invited Rus-
sian Jewish women to her
home to meet American
Jewish women. At the end
of the first meeting, names
were drawn by the Russian
Jewish women, pairing
them with American
Jewish women for addi-
tional social meetings.

several of the Russian Jews
to their home to meet
American Jeweish couples

demonstrated in front of the
UN against Israel's with-
drawal from Sinai. The
demonstrators, mostly stu-
dents from the Stern Col-
lege of Yeshiva University,
carried placards and
changed, "No Retreat From
Yamit."
The rally was sponsored
by the Movement to Stop
with Withdrawal in Sinai.
