The 10 a.m. meeting on the third Friday each month is one of the highlights of my life. I learn more from the writers than they do from me. Since 1945 I have been teaching English and classics at Wayne State University. Because Friday is my day off, I have been able to attend the meetings of the Writers' Club, listen- ing to blind Mr. Ross de- scribe his life in Russia, Mrs. Burchardt her life in a Shanghai ghetto, Mr. Joyrich read his transla- tions of Hebrew and Yiddish poetry, and Mina Stone her translations of Pushkin., When composition stu- dents at the university grope for ideas, I wish they cOuld listen to my writers read their works. I guess it comes from the writers hav- ing lived such full lives that they are able to see beauty, pattern and meaning in a snowflake or a blade of grass. Cruelty and fear shake hands together.
