young Russian Jews were
visiting the club and using
its facilities, which include
a film center and library. He
also claims that club repre-
sentatives contact his office
almost daily for information
on reaching Russian Jews
in Chicago.
Arkaday Lvow, a Russian
Jewish writer who arrived
in New York several years
ago, said it isn't surprising
that Russian Jews are lured
to Christianity given their
lack of Jewish identity in
Russia.
With their Jewish iden-
tity sheathed in ignor-
ance, many Russian Jews
now enter an Ainerican
Jewish society increas-
ingly devoid of concrete
religious, national or his-
torical content. Recent
Russian Jewish emi-
grants, said Lvow, are
simply following their
way into the American
mainstream which
encourages seculariza-
tion.
Lvow, who says he knows
of 40 Jews who have con-
verted in Manhattan, be-
lieves the onus is on Ameri-
can Jewry to help educate
Russian Jews on their his-
tory and culture.
Tzal warns that increased
conversion among Russian
Jews is a harbinger of what
could eventually happen "to'
the entire Russian Jewish
community here" if Ameri-
can Jewry remains passive.
"It is not enough to give
Russian Jews housing, jobs
and financial assistance in
the U.S.," said Tzal, whose
department is responsible
for bringing Russian Jews
to Israel. "But if Jewish
organizations wish to pro-
vide such aid, they should
be equally concerned with
insuring that those emi-
grants remain Jewish."
"The national pride
which exists among Ameri-
can Jewry for playing an
important role in saving
many Russian Jews can
quickly turn to national
shame if this situation is not
reversed," the Jewish
Agency official said.
