Center Restates Music, Dance
Fest; Cultural Series to Begin

The Jewish Community
Center has rescheduled its
Celebration of Jewish
Music and Dance for 3:30
p.m. Sunday in the main
Center complex.
Among the performers
not previously announced
in the musical portion of the
program are: Helen Ker-
win, pianist; Marcy Chan-
teaux, cellist; and Inez Re-
dman, violinist.
At 2:30 p.m. Sunday,
Vladimir Frumkin and a
group of singers from Ober-
lin College will present a

program of satirical songs
about Soviet life at the main
Center complex.,
The program is co-
sponsored by the Rus-
sian Acculturation Pro-
gram of the Center and
the Detroit Soviet Jewry
Committee of the Jewish
Community Council.
There is a chargg for ad-
-mission and tickets will be
available at the door.
The Center, in conjunc-
tion with the Israel Infor-
mation and Resource Cen-
ter, will begin an Israel Cul-
ture Series 12:30 p.m. Wed-
nesday at the Center.
The program, "You Gotta
Have Art," will feature De-
anna Sperka, whose topic
will be "Comparisons: Con-
temporary Israeli Art and
the American Art Scene."
Ms. Sperka was edu-
cated at Eastern Michi-
gan University, the
Brooklyn Museum Art
School, the Cooper Union
for the Advancement of
Science and Art and at
the Bezalel Museum Art
School in Jerusalem.
She has had solo ex-
hibitions in the metropoli-
tan area and in New York
City. Her works have been
in major exhibitions
throughout Michigan and

On Feb. 16 at 8 p.m.,
David Freedman, professor
in the department of reli-
gious studies at the Univer-
sity of Michigan, will speak
on "An Exciting Discovery:
The Ark of the Covenant (or
What Do Safed and 'Raid-
ers of the Lost Ark' Have in
Common?)" in the Center
library. There is a charge.
Edna Amir Coffin will
speak on "The Arab in Is-
raeli Literature" at 12:30
p.m. Feb. 23 in the Center
library. Ms. Coffin is a
professor in the depart-
ment of Hebrew lan-
guage and literature at
U-M. Luncheon will be
served, and there is a
charge for the lecture
and luncheon.
Shlomo Bachar, Israeli
folkdance choreographer,
will conduct a series of
workshops entitled, "Leap
Into Dance," 2 and 7 p.m.
Feb. 28 and 7 p.m. March 1
in Shiffman Hall of the Cen-
ter. There is a charge.
The series will conclude
with a program entitled, "I
Hear a Symphony," 2 p.m.
March 28 in the DeRoy
Studio Theater of the Cen-
ter. Gary Bertini, music di-
rector of the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra, will speak
on "The Development of Is-
raeli Symphonic Music."

Polish Relief
Funds Sought

The International Red
Cross is appealing for funds
to finance relief work in Po-
land, following an extension
of assistance programs in
Poland and the effects of re-
cent flooding in the Plock
region west of Warsaw.
Contributions are being
accepted locally through the
Southeastern Michigan
Chapter, Executive Office,
P.O. Box 351, Detroit
48232. Checks should be
made payable to "The
American Red Cross" and
earmarked for "Polish
Emergency Relief."

Norma Schonwetter has
been proclaimed "Home-
maker of Family City" and
awarded a certificate by
Oak Park Mayor Charlotte
Rothstein and the city coun-
cil in recognition of her ta-
lents.
Mrs. Schonwetter, who
received the certificate
Monday, will be in San An-
tonio, Tex., next Monday
at the Pillsbury Bake-Off,
where she is a finalist.
A cooking teacher and
communal volunteer, Mrs.
Schonwetter is lending her
expertise to the Greater De-
troit Section, National
Council of Jewish Women,
who is preparing a cook-
book, "Fiddler in the
Kitchen," which is expected

WASHINGTON — "The
State of Jewish Experience
in America" will be exam-
ined July 8-11, during the
annual Bnai Brith National
Institute of Judaism at the
Bnai Brith Perlman Camp
in Pennsylvania.
