The building is surrounded by eucalyptus trees and flow- ers. People in the synagogue say that the parents of the younger kibutz members opened a small room for prayer many years ago. They told the management of the kibutz that coming from the Diaspora they were used to praying. The kibutz dedicated a small wooden shack as a prayer room. Some young kibutz mem- bers supported this appeal. They had never visited a synagogue or seen Torah scrolls. They lent a hand in building the new synagouge, announcing, "We are not religious. We were not educated for that, but there should be a synagogue in the kibutz." A gabbai and cantor were chosen. Drought, Cold Damage Crops TEL AVIV (JTA) — Meteorologists in Galilee say they have recorded this year the lowest level of rain- fall since 1911, when pre- cipitation measurement began to be recorded in the region. The shortage of rain this year has not yet been offi- cially declared a drought, although weather forecas- ters and farmers say there is little hope of sufficient rain during the rest of the winter making up for the shortfall and saving crops. In addition to the shor- tage of rain, which has dried up the fields, banana and avocado growers in Galilee and the Jordan Valley say an unexpected cold spell during recent nights has de- stroyed much of their crop. The two men, Franz- Joachim Bojarski, 30, of Fuerth, and Klaus Hubei, 20, of Bopfingen in Bavaria, were alleged members of the outlawed so-called sports groups headed by Karl Heinz Hoffman.. According to German police authorities, the group has been reconstituted in a Palestine Liberation Organization camp in Lebanon. Ahron Cohen prepares the kibutz children for Bar Mitzva. There is a steady minyan in the synagogue on Friday nights, Sabbath day and holidays. In the middle of the week a minyan is col- lected if a member has a yahrzeit and wishes to say Kadish. On Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur one can find 600 kibutz members in the synagogue with more pray- ing outside the building. On these holidays members of the kibutzim in the vicinity Maayan Barukh, Sde Nehemia and Neot Mor- dehai, and even from the kibutzim of Hashomer Hat- zair Amir and Shamir, come to join the prayers. The founders and mana- gers of the synagogue main- tain that they are neither religious nor anti-religious, but keep the Jewish tradi- tion.
