Begin Peres Clash Over Handling of Soviet Jewry

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Pre-
mier Menahem Begin and
Labor Party chairman Shi-
mon Peres are engaged in a
war of words over the issue
of Soviet Jewry and Israel's
handling of the problem.
It started with a state-
ment by Peres last week
that the Likud government
was "not Zionist" because it
paid insufficient attention
to the plight of Soviet Jewry
and that immigration to Is-
rael had dropped to an all-

Memorial Asked

'NEW YORK — (JTA) —

City Holocaust Memorial
Center that would also
serve archival and research
functions, was stressed by
Richard Berman, the New
York State Housing Com-
missioner, and others who
apeeared at a hearing of the
Mayor's Holocaust Memo-
rial Task Force Monday.
Berman appeared in his
capacity as chairman of the
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Council of New York's
Holocaust Commission.
The Holocaust Memorial
Task Force was established
by Mayor Edward Koch last
July to determine what
kind of memorial should be
created, where it should be
located and what it would
cost. The Task Force will
create a special committee
to see the project through.

Damascus Tuesday.

test organized by the Syrian
Federation of Trade Unions,
was in response to Ameri-

Council resolution calling
for sanctions against Israel
