Buber's Zionist-Israel Views Defined by Dr. Susser
Martin Buber left
legacies continually com-
manding universal interest
in his philosophy, his influ-
ence upon social scientists,
his introduction of the I and
Thou dialogue, the trend of
which is often at the root of
humanistic disputes.
His role in Zionism, his
conflicts with the move-
ment's leaders, commenc-
ing with Theodor Herzl, his
leadership in the movement
for an Arab-Jewish accord,
significantly affected pre-
Israel thinking and contin-
ued during statehood.
The basic factors in the
Martin Buber ideology ap-
pear in what may well be
termed the most scholarly
study of his life and world. It
is presented in "Existence
and -Utopia: The Social and
Political Thought of Martin
Buber" (Fairleigh Dickin-
son University Press) by
Bernard Susser.
Dr. Susser, a native
New Yorker, earned his
PhD at Columbia Univer-
sity. He settled in Israel in
1969 and is senior lec-
turer in the Bar-Ban Uni-
versity and Tel Aviv Uni-
versity political science
departments.
Dr. Buber had a 65-year
history as a Zionist and the
evaluative work by Dr. Sus-
ser traces it in all its stages,
with emphasis on the criti-
cal period which began with
a break with Dr. Theodor
Herzl, the founder of the
World Zionist Organization
and the World Zionist Con-
gresses. Buber leaned
toward the cultural views of
Ahad HaAm. In his early
reference to Bub(r's asso-
ciation with the Zionist
movement, which began at
the end of the last century,
Susser states:
"Buber's association with
Zionism, which spanned a
period of more than 65
years, began in the closing
years of the 19th Century in
the youthful Zionist circles
of Berlin. From the very
outset, as has been noted,
his was a dissenting voice.
So much so that at one
point, after a particularly
sharp disagreement, Herzl
wrote Buber asking that he
try to 'find his way back to
the movement.' But Buber
persisted in his opposition."
"Vitriolic polemics" is the
assignation given to the
philosophic disputes that
ensued.
Susser gives an ac-
count of Buber's leader-
ship in Ihud, the move-
ment that gained the
support of Dr. Judah L.
Magnes, first president of
the Hebrew University,
among others. It sought
accord with Arabs, and
on that theme there is the
additional emphasis by
Susser.
It was on this score that
Susser states in this defini-
tive work on Buber:
"It was often charged
against Buber that the bi-
national solution suited his
tastes very well because he
had neither appreciation for
the land nor sympathy for
the dream of an autonomous
Jewish people in it. This of
course was quite untrue. It
which has been distorted
until now; he is commanded
to toil to restore and clear
the road to mutual under-
standing with the Arab
people, a road that is at pre-
sent covered by rubble.' "
There is no limit to the
commandment to serve the
spirit must be fulfilled, from
now on, in this country and
from inside it.
" 'Still, he who will serve
the spirit truly and with all
his heart is commanded to
attempt to set straight that
interest in Buber and
Buberism and in "Existence
and Utopia" Dr. Susser adds
much additional, valuable
material in explanation of
both the philosopher and his
views.

MARTIN BUBER
JEWISH NEWS
was not with ease or with
joy that Buber relinquished
his ideal of an all-Jewish
Palestine. But, he began
with the conviction that
`neither people can get in
Palestine all it wants and
both people will have to
make concessions.'
"In order to prevent the
inevitable bloodshed and to
prevent even in the even-
tuality of a Jewish victory
— a fortress Israel living by
its military prowess in hos-
tile Arab encirclement,
Buber was willing to forego
the ideal of total indepen-
dence in favor of bi-
nationalism. It was all
reality would allow. And it
was enough, provided that
the national rights of the
Jewish community were
guaranteed and an auton-
omous national existence
was possible."
Susser makes this im-
portant comment on
Buber and his major
views on Zionism and the
Jewish state:
"Among Israelis, he was
quite an unpopular figure, a
Propheta in Patria'; his
name, more often than not,
bringing a sour smile to
their lips. And paradoxi-
cally, while this name be-
came a household word in
the West, it was largely ig-
nored, even unknown,
among the youth of his own
country. Still in 1958, the
octogenarian wrote:
" 'The form of the Jewish
Republic that was born out
of the war, the state of Is-
rael, I accepted as my coun-
try. I have nothing in corn-
mon with those Jews who
take it upon themselves to
dispute the factual form of
Jewish independence. The

`Egypt Will
Continue Peace
5
After Evacuation
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Defense Minister Ariel
Sharon assured Knesset
members that Egypt would
not end the peace process
with Israel after the evacu-
ation of Sinai is completed
next April 26.
Briefing the Knesset's
Foreign Affairs and Secu-
rity Committee on his visit
to Cairo last week, Sharon
said that after the Sinai
withdrawal, Egypt will
press Israel for more conces-
sions but will not launch
war against Israel or break
diplomatic relations.
Therefore, • Sharon
recommended that Israel
tone down its political dec-
larations and not panic as
the withdrawal date ap-
proaches.
