THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Center Honors Chajes on 42nd Music by Sam Barnett Big or small, we custom the music to-your needs. 968-2563 Julius Chajes, conductor of the Center Symphony Or- chestra, will be honored on the occasion of his 42nd an- niversary in that post 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the DeRoy Studio Theater of the main Jewish Community Center. In honor of the occasion, the world premiere of a dance, choreographed by Jacob Lascu and performed to the music of Chajes' "Is- raeli melodies," will be pre- sented. Harriet Berg, director of the Festival Dancers, and Barbara Rinaldo of the Jewish Center staff, have collaborated on a dance entitled, "The Two," based on the music of Aaron- Cop- land's Piano Sonata No. 2. Artist Deanna Sperka de- signed the sets. Chajes will perform and conduct his own compositions. Prior to coming to De- troit, Chajes was head of the piano department of the Music College in Tel Aviv. He has been a member of the part-time performance faculty of the music de- partment at Wayne State University for 30 years. Five of Chajes piano stu- dents won the 1949 Chopin competition here and in 1966, student Beth Rhodes, was awarded the National Baldwin Keyboard Award, the only Detroiter so far to win the prize. Prior to coming to De- troit, Hollman appeared with the Baltimroe Sym- phony, the North Carolina Symphony and the Henry Mancini Orchestra. He studied at the New School of Music, Curtis Institute, Muhlenberg College and Indiana University. Benyas is a sophomore at the University of Michigan, where he is solo oboist for the university's campus or- chestra.
