JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Israel is a resource-poor
country, lacking even the
one resource that other
resource-poor countries
possess: water.
Economist Steven Plant
of the Technion says Israel
has developed what is prob-
ably the world's most
sophisticated system of
water collection, conserva-
tion, and transportation. At
the same time Israel has
been at the forefront of sci-
entific innovation in ag-
riculture.
Israel has been the
supplier of advanced ag-
riculture technology to
many of the world's dry
areas, including America
and several countries
without diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel. Israel
supplies 85 percent of its
domestic agricultural
consumption, and is one
of the few countries out-
side North America that
is a major exporter of
both agricultural output
and industrial products.
Between 1952 and 1968,
the growth of agricultural
output per capita in Israel
was the highest in the
world. In milk and cotton,
Israeli productivity is the
world's highest, according
to Plant.
Council President
Urges Discussion
on Intermarriage
FREEHOLD, N.J. — The
president of the Rabbinical
Council of America has
called on the Council of
Jewish Federations and
Welfare Funds to place in-
termarriages on the agenda
of their annual meetings.
In an address to the 33rd
mid-winter conference of
the council, Rabbi Sol Roth
said that there is a consen-
sus within the Jewish com-
munity that mixed mar-
riages are "a serious threat"
to Jewish life.
