NEW YORK — The dis-
covery of the medieval
Jewish Mongolian popula-
tin of the Celarevo region of
Yugoslavia was the subject
of a recent international
symposium in Belgrade.
Organized by the Jewish
Museum in Belgrade and
the City Museum of Novi
Sad in Yugoslavia, the
symposium brought to-
gether scholars from across
Europe to assess the infor-
mation developed since ar-
cheological excavations
eight years ago unearthed
250 graves at a brickyard in
Celarevo.
They also discovered
fragments of Roman bricks
with a menora, Hebrew let-
tering and Jewish symbols
inscribed on them.
In 1973, a preliminary
investigation revealed that
the 248 skeletons dis-
covered in the graves be-
longed to a basically Mongo-
lian population. One of the

Celarevo skeletons was sent
to the research laboratory of
the British Museum, for
radio-carbon dating, and
was found to be about 1,000
years old.
Analysis revealed that
the Mongolians living in
Celarevo came into con-
tact with Judaism and
adopted some Jewish
practices. However, due
to the lack of comparat-
ive anthropological data,
it is still not quite clear
who these Mongolian
people were.
Many participants in the
symposium put forward the
theory that the population
under study was probably of
Khazar origin. The
Khazars, a national group
of general Turkic type,
commanded a sovereign
empire in Eastern Europe
between the seventh and
tenth centuries. The lead-
ing Khazars of the period
professed Judaism.

HADERA (JNI) — The
first Hadera power
generator switched from
liquid fuel to coal this week.
When all four coal
generators are attached to
the national power grid, the-
country will save $230 mil-
lion per year in fuel costs.
When completed, the
Hadera station will provide
60percent of all power used,
drastically reducing costs
and dependence on foreign
oil, whose national bill tops
$700 million annually.
