The Best of Everything

EVER GO TO A delica-
tessen where you have the
option of valet parking?
. . . Can't think of one .
not even in New York or Los
Angeles . . . But it's here
now in Detroit . . . at Peter
Mel's Backstage Deli .' .
on Woodward north of Six
Mile Rd. . .where
Paradiso's once flourished
and then floundered.
You won't recognize the
former Paradiso's' . . It's
now a very New Yorkish
spot with almost every
Broadway show poster im-
aginable hanging all over
the place . . . Atop the front
door inside is the marker,
42nd St. . . . Times Square
and Broadway.
Seating is for 112 in indi-
vidual booths . . . with
stereo music at all times
. . . oldies and show tunes.
Backstage Deli has
both waiters and wait-
resses . . . Our hat-
changing waiter, Bill
Hewitt, knew his stuff
. . . wouldn't think of
bringing brandy without
it being warmed.
There's another part of
Backstage Deli that is ut-
terly delightful . . . It's a
lounge called Footlights
. . . seating 80 . . . So
much like being in New
York .. listening to live
keyboard tinglings.
Backstage Deli, run by
Jean Dine and brother
Peter Mel, is probably the
most innovative restaurant
around . . . decoratively
speaking . . . formerly hid-
den away on Seven Mile
east of Woodward.
It's the perfect spot for
show biz people while in
town . . . they're really
surrounded by that type of
scenic environment.
Backstage Deli is open
seven days a week . . . 10
a.m. to 4 a.m. .. . or, as the
very diversified and clever
menu states, "Curtain goes
up at 10 a.m. and the last
performance ends at 4 a.m.
If you can't get away, and
yearn for some little New
York atmosphere, go to
Peter Mel's Backstage Deli
on Woodward . . . You
really won't come very
much closer . . . And don't
forget the Footlights
Lounge. . If we didn't
know other
wise, we'd never
have believed being in De-
troit could be so close to New
York.

waitress Nancy Beanblos-
som, waiter Mark Davis and
waitress Ul i
Bergschwenger.
Fashions were well-
received by an audience
that expected silly
clothes and got styles out
of Cosmopolitan Maga-
zine . . . Army and Navy
surplus.
The name "Rip's" is from
nickname of its original
owner, Clarence Hum-
phrey, who opened the doors
in 1941 with seating for
about 70 to 100 . . . An
addition 20 years later in-
cluded a lounge and pushed
seating to 150.
It still has a real brick-
tiled floor, ceiling fans, old
windows with stained glass
- . . . and a basement that
looks like something out of a
haunted house . . . now
used as storage . . . a place
for things that have been
there years and years . . .
various little rooms holding
Tiffany lamps, brass lamps,
bits and pieces of old China,
boxes of old recordings, etc.
The entertainment at
Rip's features one of the top

from Joe's Army and Navy
surplus in Pontiac . . . and
almost the entire staff got
into the act.

of Rip's . . . show coordina-

taurant in Birmingham and 'or
