Marking the 20th an- niversary of the establish- ment of the first women's police unit, Mrs. Ofira Navon recently held a re- ception at the Preisdent's House where Nitzav Mis- hne Naomi Shadmi, ex- head of the women's police unit recalled the initial doubts. These were not only among the public, but also in the police command, as to whether or not women were capable of carrying out all the difficult and dangerous jobs that are expected of policemen. No such doubts, how- ever, are evident today, she stated, with women in the Israel Police better utilized than in any force in the world. "Manpower (or womanpower) should never be wasted," she said, "especially in a country like Israel." Deputy Police Spokes- woman of Jerusalem Cent- ral Headquarters, Rivka Weintraub, began her the home. I couldn't accept that. I love my career, I get enormous satisfaction from it. Israel Economy Improved in '81 - NEW YORK — Israel succeeded in reducing infla- tion by 31 percentage points last year while increasing its gross national product, boosting exports and rais- ing productivity. At the same time, unem- ployment was kept down to the 1980 level of 5 percent and the civilian balance- of-payMents deficit declined by five percent, according to a report by the Israel Eco- nomic Mission in New York. The December inflation rate was 5.2 percent, bring- ing the total for the year to 101.5 percent. the 1980 fig- ure was 133 percent and the inflation rate in 1979 was 111 percent. The report also revealed that the "consumption basket" of goods and serv- ices used by the poorest tenth of the population r by 90.7 percent — less th,_ / the rate of inflation. In com- parison, the goods and serv- ices used by the wealthiest 10 percent of the population went up by 106 percent. This development reversed the trend of recent years, in which the impact of infla- tion was felt more acutely by the poor, the report said. c'r<
