Peace Factor

KEEPING THE
DREAM ALIVE

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
A recent survey by the
PORI Institute shows that
69.3 percent of the Israeli
public believes that no
peace is possible with the
Arab world without a solu-
tion of the Palestinian prob-
lem.

Some 6.1 percent stated
that under certain circum-
stances (for example, an
agreement with Jordan),
there is a possibility of
peace even without a final
solution of the Palestinian
problem. Some 9.4 percent
failed to express any opin-
ion.

UnITED AIRMES

ISRAEL-AMERICAN UNITY MUST PREVAIL

T

he levels of rhetoric
- between Jerusalem and
Washington are getting out of hand.
It is time that those who care most
deeply about the survival of Israel
take serious stock of the potential for
disaster that is inherent in what is
really nothing more than a disagree-
ment over ways of achieving goals on
which we are united.
Admittedly, these are difficult days
in American-Israeli relations. Harsh
words are being exchanged between
good friends and old allies. Motives
are being questioned on both sides.
Citizens of Israel are wondering
out loud about the depth of
America's commitment. Can we be
counted on to remain steadfast if the
choice becomes unavoidable between
Israel's survival and America's con-
tinued access to Arab oil?
Citizens of the United States are
wondering out loud whether the cur-
rent government of Israel is more in-
terested in the acquisition of land
than in the pursuit of peace. They are
asking how long we can continue to
maintain the historic levels of support
for a government that - seems be
determined to act as it cho
oses
without consultation or consent.
Begin is saying that Israeli policy
has to be determined in Israel rather
than in Washington. Reagan is sug- .
gesting that American policy has to :
be made in -Washington rather than

in Jerusalem.
Too many non-Jews in this coun-
try are saving that unless the Prime
Minister shapes up and stops acting
on his own we might as well let go
and let Israel sink or swim. Too
many Jews are saying that any
criticism of the words. or actions of the
Israeli government is indicative of an
anti-semitic bias and tantamount to
another abandonment of the Jews to ,
another Holocaust.
Menachcm Begin is not Israel.
You don't have to agree with his
every statement or policy. Half of the
citizens of Israel don't. In a
democracy, which Israel certainly is,
elected officials come and go. But
Israel must remain. That supersedes
all else.
I've certainly disagreed with many
of the decisions and directions of
many of America's elected leaders,
but that has never meant that my
allegiance to my country was in
doubt. Dissent is not betrayal. It may
be the fullest expression of loving
concern. Disagreements are tem-
porary. But Israel must remain,
forever.

birth. The facility was
opened in August 1980.
Rabbi Hertz Frankel said
the facility, Yeled
Shaashuim, was a mansion
originally built as a resi-
dence near Monroe, N.Y. for
the late Satmar Rebbe,
Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, but
he died a day after the man-
sion was completed.
Rebbetzin Teitelbaum
decided to donate the build-
ing for use as a rest home for
new mothers and it was
opened with accommoda-
tions for 22 women, each of
whom stays from 10 to 14
days.
Guests are accepted on

a first-come-first-serve
basis. No reservations
are accepted before
birth. Mothers and in-
fants must come straight
from the hospital, except
when there is a ritual cir-
cumcision. In such cases,
mothers can come im-
mediately after the rite.

A full staff of registered
nurses provides complete
care for the infants to re-
lieve the mothers of all
chores. Each mother visits
her baby every four hours to
feed the infant, except for
the 2 a.m. feeding, which is
handled by the nurses so the

mother can get an undis-
turbed night's sleep.
The mothers are served
three meals a day. There is
also a coffee room available
around the clock. Fathers
and other relatives can visit
mother and child from 7:30
to 9 p.m. each evening and
on Friday and Saturday af-
ternoons.
Cost for the service is
based on ability to pay and
ranges from $43 to $65 per
day. Actual cost to the
facility is $96 a day with the
difference made up by con-
tributions.
