However, this wasn't any kind of chic- ken . . . It was one that did right proud of itself both as a culinary delight and specimen of healthful enjoyment . . . plus helping to do away with a false con- ception held by many. The untrue conception that Healthy Jones restau- rant on Northwestern Highway, north of 12 Mile, is "just another health food operation" couldn't be further from the truth .. . Pure fact is that it is a natural foods restaurant (and nothing at all wrong with that) . . . not a bean sprout and rabbit food eat- ery. The delicious honey baked chicken I recently ate for dinner at Healthy Jones was just one of a long list of foods that make up this misunderstood restaurant . . . Turkey, for example, is also a big favorite . . . Fresh fish, too . . . And a salad bar with about 40.items far sur- passes many considered among the best. One of the great drinks at Healthy Jones was re- cently awarded a huge trophy as the best non- alcoholic drink in the state ... at recent Super Mix Off -Competition by Michigan Host Commit- tee for Super '82 ... (one of the functions preced- ing this Sunday's Super Bowl) ... It's called Coconut Tango ... made with coconut milk, banana, strawberries, crushed ice and topped with a wedge of pineap- ple. The pizza . . . round or square . . . at Healthy Jones is considered among the best . . . with mushrooms, green peppers and cheese . . . and a crisp whole-wheat crust . . . Healthy Jones pizza is truly a delicious taste experience . . . as are the yum yum nachos with melted Monterey Jack and Muenster cheeses. There are so many good things to eat on the Healthy Jones menu . . . about 150 items to be exact . . . Ameri- can, Mexican, Chinese, Greek, Italian, French, Spanish . . . with people coming from all over to taste the specialties only served at Healthy Jones restau- rant . . . and many of these people don't know or even care that they are getting their yummies at a natural foods restaurant. Seating at Healthy Jones is 140 . . . with beamed ceil- ing, whirling fans, green booths; green chairs at ta- bles, green candles and an ultra clean environment .. . amidst real Ficus trees with tiny lights and live plants. The original Healthy Jones opened February 1978 with a counter and 15 seats . 35 all told ... In May 1979, it moved to present larger and spa- cious quarters. Friday, January 22, 1982 31 At first, service left much to be desired . . . But this has been completely turned around . . . Grace and expe- diency are the things now at Healthy Jonesrestaurant . . . In the evenings, gra- cious, charming, smiling hostess and night manager Linda Rosner, daughter of Dr. Saul and Charlotte Rosner, sees to this. Our waiter, Dave Moss, son of Richard and Judith Moss, was an example of the courteous, efficient and pleasant ways that are now Healthy Jones trademarks. I didn't mind waitingjust a trifle longer for my food . . . knowing that nothing is frozen ... and everything made strictly from scratch, so to speak. When it came, the meal was certainly one well worth any waiting for . . . and surprisingly, it wasn't that long. After munching on those vonderful cheese-filled nachos . . . and tasting the superb pizza, I had my first visit to a salad bar where the word "sumptuous" could aptly be used . . . This word is one of the most worn-out expressions offered by so many restaurateurs. The salad bar at Healthy Jones restaurant is far from the ordinary ... The fresh ingredients are plentiful and oodles of good tasty de- lights . . . plus two soups .. . await diners. Then Dave brought me that honey baked chicken with its taste tingling juici- ness . . . ever so good .. . true meat, not pumped up with hormones . . . not fed with preservatives or additives . . . a free running chicken that was once allowed to rove about with- out being caged.
