Beth Achim at 8 p.m. Thursday at Beth Achim. The 100-voice Rackham Symphony Choir has be- come the official choir of the Detroit Symphony Or- chestra and has performed with the DSO under the ba- tons of many conductors, such as Paul Paray, Sixten Ehrling, Aldo Ceccato, Antal Dorati and Thomas Shippers. The choir also performed with the Warren, Windsor and Dearborn Symphony Orchestras. Under a new sponsorship, the Detroit Community Music School, they also have a new music director and conductor, John A. Smith, who has been an administrator in the School of Music at the University of Michigan. Shimansky and two can- tors from St. Louis, Ed- ward Fogel and Leon Lis- sek. The cantors will per- form several liturgical and Hebrew selections accompanied by the choir. In addition, the cantors also will render solo selections including operatic arias. French-born Cantor Lis- sek was graduated from the Cantors Institute of the Jewish Theological Semi- nary. He was the leading tenor of opera companies in Buffalo and Philadelphia.
