Israel Intends to Ask for Clarifications - from 4 Nations on Peacekeeping Offer JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel is expected to ask for "clarifications" of nearly identical letters received from Britain, France, Italy and Holland last week - reiterating their Willing- ' ness to participate in the Sinai peacekeeping force. Israel wants the four powers to make clearer the inction between the of their participation -their earlier statements which referred to the Euro- pean Economic Commu- nity's (EEC) 1980 Venice declaration. Secretary of State . Ale- xander Haig reportedly urged Israel to accept the four powers' letters during his visit to Israel last week. Israeli officials acknowl- edged that the delay in doing this stemmed from certain reservations still held by *Israel. The Venic'e declaration was unacceptable be- cause it called for asso- ciation of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the Mideast peace process. Israel wants the Euro- pean powers to acknowl- edge that the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in Sinai derives its mandate solely from the Camp David agreements and x the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty before they join it. Diplomatic contacts on this matter between Israel and the four European gov- ernments have been kept on a low key. California Reports Increase of Anti-Semitic Incidents LOS ANGELES (JTA) — Anti-Semitic incidents in California, ranging from property vandalism to as- saults, increased six-fold last year, David Lehrer, an attorney for the Anti- Defamation League of Bnai Brith, told a governor's task force last week. The task force is inves- tigating reports of an up- surge of hostility against blacks, orientals and Jews in the state. Edmund Brown, Jr., agreed that the rise of racism was notable within the middle clase. In that connection, Davis cited the recent public remark by State Sen. John Schmitz, an ultra-conservative Re- publican, that opponents of a measure to outlaw abortion in California appeared to him as "a sea of hard Jewish and (arguably) female faces" and were "murderous marauders." Davis char- acterized this as "verbal vandalism." Lehrer blamed the rise in anti-Semitic incidents on "paramilitary activity by various extremist groups on the radical right" and on "more subtle organizations" which disseminate informa- tion through books and pamphlets that perpetuate racial stereotypeg.and incite to violence. THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 22, 1982 19 New Book Offers Evidence of Wallenberg Death in '65 ••••••• —••Ra•be•lai: Nature abhors a vacuum. , NEW YORK — A new volume on Raoul Wallen- berg, the former Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust, asserts that Wallenberg died in a Soviet mental hos- pital during the 1960s and is not still living in a Soviet prison, a theory espoused by several people involved with the Wallenberg case. The book, "Lost Hero: The Mystery of Raoul Wallen- berg," by Frederick E. Wer- bell and Thurston Clarke, claims two leading Swedish investigators concluded in 1965 that Wallenberg had died a short time before in a Soviet mental hospital after being tortured there. Wal- lenberg was captured dur- ing the Soviet invasion of Hungary following World - War II. -- The authors said the two investigators, Swe- den's former Prime Minister, Tage Erlander, and a prominent Swedish physician, Nanna Svartz, had been given convinc- ing details of Wallen- berg's death by high Soviet officials in 1965, but had decided to keep the information secret.
