Memory on 40th Anniversary of Institute
Commemorating the 40th
anniversary of the B. Be-
nedict Glazer Institute for
Christian Clergy, Temple
Beth El has issued a pam-
phlet paying tribute to the
memory of Dr. Glazer who
served as the congregation's
rabbi 10 years, until his
death in 1952 at the age of
50.
Dr. Richard C. Hertz, who
succeeded Dr. Glazer, in an
introductory note, explains
the naming of the annual
seminars in tribute to the
spiritual leader who helped
to inspire the institute. He

selection of an essay of
appreciation of Dr. Glazer's
noteworthy qualities and
achievements by Dr. Julian
Feibelman, who was his
classmate at Hebrew Union
College and a lifelong
friend, from the latter's au-
tobiographical work, "The
Making of a Rabbi." In his
introductory comments Dr.
Hertz states:
"We at Beth El treasured
these intimate stories. We
want to share some of them
with you so that you will
better understand the be-
loved rabbi whose idea it
was to establish an institute
for Christian clergy back in
the war years of 1943. From
humble beginnings, this in-
stitute which now bears his
name has become -one of the
nation's foremost programs
of interfaith achievement.
"A few anecdotes will
give you a little insight
into the warm spirit of Dr.
Glazer and the kind of
rabbi he was. He was not
only a fine scholar of
Judaism but had a keen
sense of humor as well.
After his death the Board
of Education of Detroit
dedicated a public school
in his memory, The B.
Benedict Glazer Public
School.

RABBI GLAZER
humbly dedicate these
pages to the living memory
of one who lives in the
hearts of the people he
served so faithfully."
In addition to the Feibel-
man essay, which is replete
with reminiscences about
his dear friend, the pam-
phlet reprints the tribute to
Dr. Glazer, at the time of his
death, from the Temple
Bulletin, by Philip Mar-
cuse.
The biographical data in
the volume recalls the
career of Dr. Glazer's father,
Rabbi Simon Glazer;
Glazer's adoption of the
name B. Benedict Glazer,
having disapproved of the
name Zerubbabel given him
by his parents; his scholarly
achievements at Hebrew
Union College; his two ear-
lier pulpits, in Pittsburgh
and New York, before com-
ing to Temple Beth El.
Dr. Feibelman also
pays tribute to Dr.
Glazer's engaging sense
of humor and dominant
personality:
"His grin was expansive,
covering the whole of his
lower face, and his laugh
was infectious and as hearty
as a strong gale sweeping
lesser sounds into silence.
There were so many facets
to his personality that he
became at once interesting
and at times momentarily
unpredictable.
"One of his char-
acteristics was spirited
humor, contagiously keep-
ing everyone else in liveli-
ness. He could turn the most
doleful situation into a new
and braver prospect. When
he would say, in command-
ing tones, 'cheer up kid,' the
Former French
President to Visit
Israel 'Soon'
PARIS (JTA) — Former
French President Valery
Giscard D'Estaing said last
week that he plans to visit
Israel soon as a gesture of
good will toward the Jewish
state. -
Giscard, who during his
seven years as president,
steered France along an
anti-Israeli and pro-Arab
course, made this pledge at
an election meeting in one
of Paris' Jewish areas. Gis-
card was speaking in sup-
port of Gaulist candidate
Jacque Dominati who is
running for the National
Assembly in France's first
election since last June's
Socialist victory.
change often came as in
obedience to a command.
"He was not above falling
into the trough of depres-
sion or sinking into mys-
terious doldrums. When he
did, all his brightness faded,
each ray of sunlight hid it-
self in clouds. These rare
valleys of despondency wer
the deepest I ever saw.
"Most of the time
was in high spirits. His
level of cheer was high,
and he usually remained
on it. His wrath could be
as harsh as a whipmas-
ter's, but he was seldom
wrathful except in the
knowledge of injustice.
Then he became a tower=
ing judge, denouncing,
and convincing, and Gal-
lahad's strengh was the
strength of ten."
The Glazer tribute pam-
phlet will be presented to all
the Christian ministers who
will participate in the 40th
annual Glazer Institute at
Temple Beth El on Feb. 12.
